Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG)
Scheduled flights use Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) west of the centre. Bus 119 to Nádraží Veleslavín, then the metro, is the standard cheap chain; the Airport Express bus toward the main station is simpler with bags. Taxis and ride-hail are fine after midnight. Confirm PRG — not a distant regional airport marketed with a Prague label.
There is no second Prague airport that helps a city stay. If the code is not PRG, you are probably buying a coach. Partner searches should mean PRG.
Non-stop from Europe versus a connection
From the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, Prague is typically a non-stop of about one and a half to two hours. A stopover via Frankfurt or Amsterdam is rarely necessary unless it matches a regional departure. From farther away, one-stop via a western European hub is normal.
If you are combining Prague with Vienna or Berlin, the train can beat a second flight. If you are combining with London, a non-stop into PRG is the default — see London–Prague.
Christmas markets, summer and the shoulder
Christmas market weeks and New Year lift both flights and Old Town rooms. Summer weekends fill with European city-break traffic. January–March (after Three Kings) and late autumn often soften outside school holidays.
Easter and May long weekends tighten seats from Germany and the UK. There are no live fares on this page. Mid-week returns often beat Sunday nights.
Bus 119, metro and cobbles
Buy a Prague public-transport ticket that covers the airport bus. The 119 plus metro is usually faster than a taxi at peak hours on the western approach. Night buses exist but are slower; late arrivals with two cases still take taxis into the Old Town.
Old Town and Malá Strana are the postcard bases and the noisiest. Vinohrady and the inner New Town are calmer with tram links. Cobbles punish large spinner bags — pack for walking, not for a transfer hub.
Prague airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Transfer to centre / resort | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Václav Havel (PRG) | All city arrivals | Bus 119 + metro / Airport Express ~35–50 min | Hills and cobbles with wheelie cases |
Airport transfers — quick guide
- Prague: Bus + metro or Airport Express covers most centre hotels. Taxis help late and with stairs.
Baggage and where to sleep
Low-cost PRG tickets are often personal-item only. A cabin bag add-on can close the gap versus a full-service fare. If you connect elsewhere, check whether bags are through-checked.
Use the Prague stays guide once PRG is confirmed. Book castle or evening concert tickets before the cheap flight sells you a weekend that is already full. Related reading: city-break transport.
Cobbles, markets and a city that fills on cue
Prague rewards a first visit that stays walkable — Old Town, Malá Strana or Vinohrady — and that lands at PRG, not a coach from another country. Christmas markets and New Year are for people who booked rooms weeks ahead. A stag weekend still needs a cabin bag that can handle cobbles and a bus 119 transfer you have actually looked up.
If you want a quieter Czech trip, consider a shoulder-week arrival and a stay just outside the loudest square. Combining Prague with Vienna or Berlin works well by train. Combining it with a 22:00 PRG inbound and a 07:00 castle tour is how people spend the first morning asleep.
