Choosing the Maldives is really choosing an island and a transfer
The Maldives doesn't work like a normal destination: there are no neighbourhoods to weigh up, because almost every holiday means picking a single resort that occupies its own private island, reached by boat or seaplane from the capital, Malé. So the choice that shapes everything isn't really the room — it's which island you commit to, and how you get there. The atoll you choose affects the reef quality, the scenery and, crucially, the cost and length of the transfer far more than the hotel's star count.
Typical mid-range stays are approximately £180–£280 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a mid-range resort island, before transfers. This is accommodation only and does not include meals, boat or seaplane transfers, overwater villas or resort extras. Overwater villas and brand-name private islands climb quickly above that, while local-island guesthouses sit lower if you accept dress and alcohol rules ashore.
The other big decision is resort island versus local island. Resort islands are all-inclusive private worlds with overwater villas and no local rules to observe; local (inhabited) islands now have guesthouses that make the Maldives genuinely affordable, with the trade-off of modest-dress and no-alcohol rules ashore. Here's how to think it through.
Best islands and atolls in the Maldives
Traveller tip: First visit → North/South Malé atoll for short speedboat transfers. Diving / mantas → Ari or Baa (seaplane is daylight-only). Honeymoon seclusion → smaller boutique islands further out. Budget → local-island guesthouses (dress + alcohol rules). Factor transfer cost into every quote.
| Base | Best for | Transfer | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| North / South Malé | First visit, short transfers | Speedboat 20–45 min | Less remote seclusion |
| Ari / Baa Atoll | Diving, mantas, whale sharks | Often seaplane | Daylight transfers only |
| Boutique outer islands | Honeymoon overwater villas | Longer seaplane | Premium rates + timing |
| Local islands (e.g. Maafushi) | Budget guesthouses | Ferry / speedboat | Dress + no alcohol ashore |
North and South Malé atoll
For a first visit, resorts in North and South Malé atoll are the easy pick — short, cheaper speedboat transfers, plenty of choice and strong house reefs. Speedboat from MLE in 20–45 minutes, even after dark; house reef at slack tide in the morning — not a seaplane booking for a near atoll.
Ari Atoll and Baa Atoll
For diving and snorkelling, Ari Atoll and Baa Atoll are famous for mantas and seasonal whale sharks (Baa's Hanifaru Bay is a highlight) — decide between a resort base and a liveaboard. Seaplane is daylight only; a late arrival into MLE means an airport-side night, not a dash for the last flight.
Boutique outer islands
Honeymooners gravitate to smaller, more secluded boutique islands with overwater villas, private pools and quiet sandbanks, often further out.
Local-island guesthouses
The classic villa question is overwater versus beach: overwater villas are the iconic image (direct lagoon access, sunset decks), while beach villas suit families and are usually cheaper, with the sand right outside. Budget travellers should look at local-island guesthouses (around Maafushi and similar), which offer day-trip snorkelling and a fraction of the price, remembering the different dress and alcohol rules on inhabited islands. Public ferry or speedboat; bikini beach, not the village streets — eat on the island after 19:00, not Malé and back in a day with bags.
