This is the England trip most first-time visitors should take when the week is short. London does the museums and the arrival. Bath and York each earn a night because the trains from Paddington and King's Cross are fast enough that you are not spending the day in a seat.
Day 1–3 — London
Land, sleep near the terminus you will leave from, and keep the first day light. If Bath is next, choose Paddington or a short Tube hop. If York is next, King's Cross / St Pancras is the cleaner pin. South Kensington suits museum days; Bloomsbury and the South Bank suit first-timers who want to walk.
Book one timed museum if the diaries are full — British Museum or the V&A — and leave the rest to neighbourhood walking. Detail: London stays · London activities · 3-day and 5-day London plans.
Day 4 — Bath
Morning train on London to Bath (Paddington to Bath Spa, often about 1 hour 15). Walk in from the station. The Roman Baths are the timed ticket; the crescents are the afternoon. Sleep central so the evening is Georgian streets, not a bus back to a ring-road hotel. Guide: Bath.
Day 5 — York
Return to London Paddington or cross via Reading if the tickets line up, then King's Cross north on London to York — or overnight in London and take the morning LNER if that is kinder on the suitcase. York station sits outside the walls; a room inside them earns the rate. Walls, Minster and the Shambles fill a day. Guides: York stays · York activities.
