How to think about this route
London to Kuala Lumpur is a classic UK–Southeast Asia long-haul: non-stop or one-stop tickets into KLIA / KLIA2, then a short city transfer. The useful choice is less about shaving £20 and more about arrival clock, through-checked bags and how quickly you can reach your hotel district.
Before you book, compare the full journey: London departure airport, connection length if any, immigration at KLIA, and whether the KLIA Express still runs for your landing time.
London departure choices
Most itineraries leave from Heathrow or another major London airport. Manchester and regional UK airports usually connect via a European or Gulf hub — when prices are close, prefer the cleaner connection and a daylight arrival into KUL.
If two tickets look similar, pick the one that protects baggage through to Kuala Lumpur and avoids a same-day terminal change you cannot confirm online.
London airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Main Advantage | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow (LHR) | West London; full-service | Frequency / connections | Peak queues; often dearer headlines |
| Gatwick (LGW) | South / south-east | Strong leisure short-haul | Awkward from north of the river |
| Stansted (STN) | North-east / Essex; low headlines | Often cheapest ticket | Express + cross-London time |
| Luton (LTN) | North / M1 corridor | Regular low-cost schedules | Early starts; DART/coach hops |
Airlines on this route
Malaysia Airlines, British Airways partners and Gulf connections commonly appear. Prefer KUL over SZB for most visitors.
KLIA arrival and getting into the city
Kuala Lumpur International (KLIA) and the budget terminal KLIA2 sit well south of the centre. The KLIA Express to KL Sentral is the predictable way in — around half an hour — and usually beats rush-hour road traffic. From Sentral, the LRT, monorail and Grab cover KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Bangsar comfortably.
First-time visitors often soft-land near KLCC for towers and park walks, or Bukit Bintang for food streets and malls. See the Kuala Lumpur stays guide before you lock the hotel.
When the route works best
KL is warm and humid year-round, with short heavy showers possible in any month. June to August is often a touch drier for walking; festival weeks and school holidays push KLCC and Bukit Bintang rates up quickly. For peak holiday dates, start comparing six to ten weeks ahead.
Baggage, visas and trip cost
Read cabin rules on every sector of a one-stop ticket. Malaysia entry rules can change — check current GOV.UK advice before you pay. In the city you rarely need a hire car; save one for Malacca or the Cameron Highlands after your KL nights.

Airport transfers — quick guide
- Heathrow: Elizabeth line or Piccadilly; Express is faster and dearer. Allow peak security time.
- Gatwick: Gatwick Express or Thameslink. Clean from south London; slower if you start north.
- Stansted: Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then Tube. Price that before a “cheap” fare wins.
- Luton: DART to Parkway, then rail into London. Fine with a cabin bag; slower with two hold cases.
- KUL: KLIA Ekspres is the clean rail option into KL Sentral. Confirm KLIA vs KLIA2 on your ticket.
