How to think about this route
London to Mexico City is an eleven-and-a-half-hour-class long-haul into MEX, usually with one stop. The useful ticket leaves buffer for traffic into the colonias — altitude also means a gentler first evening.
London departure choices
Heathrow one-stops via US, Spanish or Latin hubs are common. Regional UK airports usually connect the same way — compare total journey and baggage rules.
London airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Main Advantage | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow (LHR) | West London; full-service | Frequency / connections | Peak queues; often dearer headlines |
| Gatwick (LGW) | South / south-east | Strong leisure short-haul | Awkward from north of the river |
| Stansted (STN) | North-east / Essex; low headlines | Often cheapest ticket | Express + cross-London time |
| Luton (LTN) | North / M1 corridor | Regular low-cost schedules | Early starts; DART/coach hops |
Airlines on this route
British Airways, Aeroméxico and US connections appear. Most use MEX.
MEX arrival and getting around
Benito Juárez International (MEX) is close to the city but transfers slow in rush hour. Use official airport taxis or a recognised ride app. See the Mexico City stays guide.
When the route works best
Dry-season months from roughly October to March are the most comfortable for walking. Summer rains are heavier; take altitude easy on day one year-round.
Baggage, entry and trip cost
Check passport and entry rules before you pay. You will not need a hire car for a normal city break — save it for Teotihuacán or onward Mexico travel.

Mexico City airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Transfer to centre / resort | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico City (MEX) | Default city arrival | Metro / taxi / rideshare toward Roma / Centro — traffic varies wildly | Altitude + traffic — keep day one light |
Airport transfers — quick guide
- Heathrow: Elizabeth line or Piccadilly; Express is faster and dearer. Allow peak security time.
- Gatwick: Gatwick Express or Thameslink. Clean from south London; slower if you start north.
- Stansted: Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then Tube. Price that before a “cheap” fare wins.
- Luton: DART to Parkway, then rail into London. Fine with a cabin bag; slower with two hold cases.
- MEX: Traffic defines door-to-door time. Prefer a neighbourhood with easy vehicle access after a long-haul.
