Weather & season

Cancún — seasonal snapshot

Heat is year-round; rain and humidity pick the month more than temperature.

  • Dry seasonThe comfortable outdoor window for most UK travellers.
  • Shoulder monthsOften the better all-in once hotels and flights are both in.
  • Wet / monsoon weeksStill workable for resorts; plan indoor time and transfers.
  • Peak UK holidaysChristmas and summer break push both fares and room rates.

Straight talk

What we'd tell a mate before they book

  • Choose the island or neighbourhood before the fare. Transfer time after a long-haul night flight is part of the price.
  • Don't ignore the wet-season forecast if you want beach days. A cheaper month can still be a good trip — just not the same trip.
  • Check bag rules on the long-haul fare family. Basic economy can turn a bargain into airport repacking.
  • A one-stop only wins if bags are through-checked. An extra night in the air rarely pays on a short resort week.

Route overview

A long-haul Gatwick hop to the Yucatán — then a second journey south.

London to Cancún is a winter-sun long-haul: current non-stops are typically around ten and a half to eleven hours from Gatwick into CUN, with one-stop tickets via the US or Europe filling the rest of the year. The flight is only half the logistics. Hotel Zone, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are different transfers, and hurricane-season dates need flexible terms.

UK winter sun with a serious flight

You fly this route for heat in British winter, not for a casual weekend. Non-stops from London Gatwick (LGW) to Cancún (CUN) are the humane version when they operate on your dates. One-stop tickets via the US can look cheaper and cost you a second security, a tighter bag rule, and a misconnect risk. Compare total elapsed time, not the first airborne sector.

School holidays, Christmas and February half-term pack both cabins and Riviera Maya hotels. Shoulder weeks in May and early December (outside US Thanksgiving spillover) can balance weather and price if your calendar allows.

Airlines on this route

British Airways, TUI, American and others appear; many UK itineraries connect. Most land at CUN.

Gatwick versus a connecting ticket from Heathrow

If a non-stop exists from Gatwick on your week, start there. Heathrow connections via the US or Madrid are Plan B. A “cheap” one-stop that lands at CUN at 23:00 after a three-hour Dallas layover is a poor arrival for a Tulum hotel two hours further on.

Count Gatwick Express, Thameslink or a car from home. A 09:00 LGW departure from north London is an early start; it is still easier than a 07:00 JFK connection after an overnight Heathrow flight.

CUN, the Hotel Zone and the coast south

Cancún Airport sits close to the Hotel Zone and much further from Tulum. ADO buses and shared shuttles cover Playa del Carmen well; Tulum needs a longer private transfer or a slower bus. Downtown Cancún is not the Hotel Zone. Read the stays guide before you book a “Cancún” room that is actually an hour south.

Hotel Zone: easy resort beaches. Playa: a walkable town. Tulum: atmosphere and ruins with a transfer you must respect after an 11-hour flight. Details live in the Cancún stays guide.

Cancún (CUN)Hotel Zone / Riviera Maya gatewayTransfer to Hotel Zone ~20–40 min; Tulum much longerADO/transfer choice depends on final base

Airport transfers — quick guide

  • Heathrow: Elizabeth line or Piccadilly; Express is faster and dearer. Allow peak security time.
  • Gatwick: Gatwick Express or Thameslink. Clean from south London; slower if you start north.
  • Stansted: Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then Tube. Price that before a “cheap” fare wins.
  • Luton: DART to Parkway, then rail into London. Fine with a cabin bag; slower with two hold cases.
  • CUN: Hotel Zone is close; Playa and Tulum need longer ADO/private transfers — book the base first.

Dry season, storms and British school dates

December to April is the drier, busier, more expensive window from the UK. June to November is more humid and overlaps Atlantic hurricane season. Plenty of trips still run; the sane response is flexible hotel terms and travel insurance you have actually read, not denial.

Compare Christmas and February half-term against the weeks beside them. A Saturday-to-Saturday that overlaps UK school holidays can cost more in the air and the room than a slightly awkward mid-week pair.

Bags, entry rules and the first day

Hold luggage is normal on this route. Ultra-basic fares that exclude it are a false economy for a week in the sun. Seat selection on a 11-hour flight is a comfort purchase worth pricing honestly. Check GOV.UK Mexico advice for passport validity and entry stamps before you fly — rules can change.

Pre-book the airport transfer to match the flight, not “we’ll get a taxi with three tired children at 22:00”. For ruins and cenotes, browse Cancún experiences after the base is chosen. A hire car helps south of Playa; it is optional in a Hotel Zone all-inclusive with shuttles.

Route FAQs

London to Cancún flight FAQs

How long is the flight from London to Cancún?

A non-stop flight from London Gatwick to Cancún typically takes around 10½ to 11 hours. Connecting itineraries take longer and vary substantially with the hub and layover, so compare total journey time rather than the airborne sectors alone.

Which London airport has direct flights to Cancún?

Current non-stop schedules operate from London Gatwick (LGW) to Cancún International Airport (CUN). Connecting results may depart from other London airports, and schedules can change, so confirm both airports before arranging transport.

How much do London to Cancún flights cost?

Guide fares on this route have been seen from around £446 return for a week, based on Aviasales data. Treat that as an indicative floor, not a locked price, and include baggage, seats and any connection costs when comparing the total. Guide figures are refreshed about every 3 months.

When is the best time to fly to Cancún?

December to April is the drier peak period, with stronger demand and generally higher accommodation costs. June to November overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season and is usually more humid, so check weather risks and choose flexible booking terms if travelling then.

Do British citizens need a visa for Cancún?

Travellers using a full British citizen passport do not currently need a visa for a tourist visit to Mexico. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay, and Mexican immigration will stamp it with the permitted stay length. Entry rules can change, so check the latest GOV.UK Mexico travel advice before departure.

Should I stay in Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum?

Choose Cancún for straightforward resort beaches, or Playa del Carmen for a more walkable beach-town base about an hour south of CUN. Tulum suits travellers prioritising cenotes, ruins and boutique stays, but its roughly two-hour transfer from Cancún Airport should be included in the journey plan.
