How to think about this route
London to Nairobi is an eight-to-nine-hour-class long-haul into NBO. Non-stops and one-stops both appear. If a Mara charter leaves at dawn, an airport-area night can be smarter than a bargain far across the city.
London departure choices
Heathrow non-stops are the simplest when available. Regional UK airports often connect via a European or Middle East hub — compare total journey and baggage rules.
London airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Main Advantage | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow (LHR) | West London; full-service | Frequency / connections | Peak queues; often dearer headlines |
| Gatwick (LGW) | South / south-east | Strong leisure short-haul | Awkward from north of the river |
| Stansted (STN) | North-east / Essex; low headlines | Often cheapest ticket | Express + cross-London time |
| Luton (LTN) | North / M1 corridor | Regular low-cost schedules | Early starts; DART/coach hops |
Airlines on this route
Kenya Airways, British Airways and others appear. Most use NBO.
NBO arrival and getting around
Jomo Kenyatta (NBO) is the main gateway. Use trusted ride apps in Westlands and Karen; arrange lodge transfers in advance. See the Nairobi stays guide and the Nairobi → Zanzibar hop.
When the route works best
July–October and January–February are prime safari windows and busiest for airport hotels. April–May rains are quieter and greener.
Baggage, visas and trip cost
Check current Kenya visa and yellow-fever rules on GOV.UK before you pay. Soft bags often work better on bush flights than hard cases.
After you land
Use the Nairobi stays guide. Related: London → Zanzibar and London → Cape Town.

Airport transfers — quick guide
- Heathrow: Elizabeth line or Piccadilly; Express is faster and dearer. Allow peak security time.
- Gatwick: Gatwick Express or Thameslink. Clean from south London; slower if you start north.
- Stansted: Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then Tube. Price that before a “cheap” fare wins.
- Luton: DART to Parkway, then rail into London. Fine with a cabin bag; slower with two hold cases.
- NBO: Arrange transfers in advance, especially for late arrivals or onward safari connections.
