Safari gateway and city break in one

Nairobi wears two hats: it's East Africa's busiest hub and the launchpad for the Maasai Mara, but it's also a genuine city break with excellent restaurants, wildlife on its doorstep and the only national park in the world bordering a capital. How you base yourself depends on which of those you're here for — a relaxed couple of nights in the city, or a quick, well-timed overnight before an early safari flight. The two call for quite different addresses.

Because the city sprawls and traffic is heavy, the smart move is to match your hotel to your plan rather than chase the lowest rate. The leafy suburbs suit sanctuary visits and calm evenings, the business-and-dining districts suit a city stay, and an airport hotel earns its place when your Mara charter leaves at dawn. Here's how they compare.

Best areas to stay in Nairobi

Traveller tip: Dining / first city nights → Westlands (ride apps). Wildlife + garden calm → Karen. Early Mara / coast flight → one airport-hotel night. Skip wandering the CBD on foot after dark.

Westlands

Westlands is the most practical city base: a dense, lively district of restaurants, malls and bars where trusted ride apps make getting around easy, and a sensible first-time choice for dining and nightlife. Uber or Bolt from NBO — 45–90 minutes in traffic; eat in Westlands after 19:00, not walking the CBD after dark.

Karen

Karen, the green suburb on the city's south-western edge, is calmer and more characterful — close to the Giraffe Centre and the elephant orphanage, with garden hotels and quieter nights, which makes it a favourite for families and anyone wanting wildlife experiences without the bustle. Giraffe Centre in the morning then a garden lunch, not a Westlands dash at 17:00 in jam.

Airport-area hotel

An airport-area hotel isn't scenic, but it's the right call for a single night before an early Mara or coast flight, saving a stressful pre-dawn drive across the city. Skip dinner in town if the flight is 05:00. The central business district is convenient for work but trades calm evenings for traffic, and it's not somewhere to wander on foot after dark — most leisure visitors do better in Westlands or Karen.

Arriving at NBO and getting around

Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) is the main gateway, with direct UK flights to Nairobi as well as plentiful one-stop options — compare flights from your home airport before booking. For getting around the city, trusted ride-hailing apps are the norm in Westlands and the suburbs; avoid walking the CBD at night, and use your hotel's recommended transport. Crucially, arrange lodge or safari transfers in advance and confirm pickup times, since Mara flights often leave very early.

Many travellers pair the safari with a beach week in Zanzibar (ZNZ), a short regional hop south, so a buffer night in Nairobi either side helps protect tight connections. Check current yellow-fever and visa requirements well before you fly, and consider a hire car only if you're doing an independent safari or coast extension rather than a guided trip.

When to go, and when rooms cost less

The dry seasons — roughly July to October and January to February — are the prime safari windows and the busiest for Nairobi's airport hotels, so book transfers and rooms early. The "long rains" of April and May are quieter and better value, with greener landscapes, though some lodges close; flexible, refundable rates make sense if your dates might shift. City hotels are less seasonal than the safari trade, so a Nairobi stay can be good value even in the shoulder months.

Typical mid-range stays are approximately KES 14,000–17,000 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide.

Best for a first visit

Westlands for restaurants and ride apps. Karen for greener, quieter nights near the giraffe and elephant visits. Airport hotels only for a dawn Mara flight — not a city-break pin. Lodge transfers from NBO are prebooked; Mara flights leave early. Check visa and yellow-fever notes before you pack. A hire car is for independent safari, not Westlands traffic.

Zanzibar is the beach after. Cape Town if the trip is city and coast, not bush.

Best for families

Karen: space, sanctuaries, a calmer night. Airport only if the safari flight is 06:00. Ride apps, not a first-day hire car.

Best for evenings

Westlands for dinner. Karen is earlier. Do not treat nightlife as a walk between unknown neighbourhoods after dark.

Nairobi stays FAQs

Westlands or Karen?

Westlands for restaurants, nightlife and easy ride apps; Karen for green, quieter surroundings near the giraffe and elephant sanctuaries — better for families and wildlife days.

Should I stay near the airport?

Only for a single night before an early Mara or coast flight. For a proper city break, base yourself in Westlands or Karen first.

How do I reach safari lodges?

Arrange lodge transfers in advance from NBO and confirm pickup times — Mara flights frequently depart at dawn, leaving no room for delays.

Do I need a hire car?

Not for a city stay — ride apps and arranged transfers cover most needs. Hire one only for independent safari or coast extensions.

What should I sort before travelling?

Check current visa and yellow-fever requirements, and pre-book transfers. If you're adding Zanzibar, build a buffer night around the regional connection.

When is an airport hotel worth it?

For a single night before a very early Mara or coast flight — not as a leisure base for the city week.
