Athens International (ATH)
Scheduled flights use Athens International / Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH). Metro line 3 reaches Syntagma in about forty minutes; the X95 bus runs toward the centre through the night. Taxis use a set airport fare into the city with night supplements. Confirm ATH — not a regional island airport with a ferry you still have to catch.
Partner searches for Athens should mean ATH. If you are actually going to Santorini or Mykonos, those have their own airports and summer congestion. A cheap ATH fare plus a missed ferry is not a bargain.
Non-stop versus a stopover — and island connections
From the UK and much of Europe, Athens is typically a non-stop of about three and a half hours from London. A connection via Rome or Munich is rarely necessary for the city itself. From farther away, one-stop via western Europe or the Gulf is normal.
Same-day island connections only work if ATH arrival, baggage reclaim and the road to Piraeus or Rafina still leave a buffer. Summer traffic to the ports is real. If the ferry is the point of the trip, consider an overnight in Athens rather than a tight self-transfer. See London–Athens and London–Santorini as separate plans.
Summer heat, Easter and the shoulder
July–August are hot, busy and priced accordingly for both flights and Plaka rooms. Greek Easter moves and can spike domestic as well as international seats. April–June and September–October often balance sightseeing weather and slightly less frantic museums.
January–March can be quieter and greener. There are no live fares here. School-holiday weeks from northern Europe fill Friday nights out of ATH.
Metro line 3, X95 and Piraeus
Line 3 is the default into Syntagma and Monastiraki with bags. X95 helps when the metro is not running or you want a single bus. Allow a lot more time if you must reach Piraeus for a ferry the same afternoon — the port is not “just after landing”.
Stay in Plaka, Monastiraki or Koukaki for a first city night; Piraeus only if the boat is at dawn. A cheap room far north of Omonia can cost more in taxis than it saves in August heat.
Bags, heat and stays
Low-cost ATH fares are often personal-item only. A cabin bag you can carry on metro stairs is more useful than a huge hold case if you continue to an island by ferry. Through-checked bags on a true connection are different from a self-transfer.
Use the Athens stays guide and, if the islands are next, the Crete stays guide. Book Acropolis timed entry in peak months. Heat and queues waste a cheap flight faster than a slightly dearer mid-week seat.
City break or island gateway — decide before you book ATH
Athens as a city break suits people who want the Acropolis, neighbourhoods like Koukaki, and a metro from ATH. Athens as an island gateway suits people who will sleep in the city if the ferry is at dawn. Mixing the two on a same-day inbound is the usual failure: heat, traffic to Piraeus, and a missed boat.
Summer suits early starts and timed Acropolis slots, not midday walking in August. Shoulder months are kinder. If Santorini or Crete is the whole holiday, look at those airports or an overnight in Athens — not a fantasy connection from a late European inbound.
