How to think about this route
For a city break, flying usually gives the widest choice of departure times. If Athens is mainly your ferry hub, match flight arrival time to port transfers and same-day sailing schedules — a cheap fare can be expensive if you miss the boat.
Before choosing, compare the full journey: travel to your London airport, security time, baggage costs, transfer into Athens and arrival time at your hotel or port.
London airport choices
Heathrow (LHR) works well for full-service airlines and Aegean connections. Gatwick (LGW) is strong for short-haul leisure schedules. Stansted (STN) and Luton (LTN) may show lower headline prices on some carriers, but ground transport time matters.
If the fare difference is small, a better-timed arrival for your ferry or hotel can be better value than the cheapest-looking ticket.
London airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Main Advantage | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow (LHR) | West London; full-service | Frequency / connections | Peak queues; often dearer headlines |
| Gatwick (LGW) | South / south-east | Strong leisure short-haul | Awkward from north of the river |
| Stansted (STN) | North-east / Essex; low headlines | Often cheapest ticket | Express + cross-London time |
| Luton (LTN) | North / M1 corridor | Regular low-cost schedules | Early starts; DART/coach hops |

Athens arrival airports
Athens International (ATH) is the main airport east of the city. Metro and suburban rail reach central districts; taxis are common for late arrivals with luggage. Allow extra time in peak summer traffic if you are heading straight to Piraeus for a ferry.
For a first visit, match your airport arrival to your hotel area. Late arrivals may make a central, easy-transfer stay more valuable than a cheaper room farther out.
Athens airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Transfer to centre / resort | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Athens (ATH) | All city arrivals | Metro / express bus toward centre ~40–60 min | Summer heat + hills with bags |
Airport transfers — quick guide
- Heathrow: Elizabeth line or Piccadilly; Express is faster and dearer. Allow peak security time.
- Gatwick: Gatwick Express or Thameslink. Clean from south London; slower if you start north.
- Stansted: Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then Tube. Price that before a “cheap” fare wins.
- Luton: DART to Parkway, then rail into London. Fine with a cabin bag; slower with two hold cases.
- Athens: Metro X95/X96 buses cover the centre. Taxis help in heat, late nights and with hold luggage.
When to compare and book
Spring and autumn balance weather and routine fares. July and August are hot and busy — book Acropolis and museum slots early. Easter and UK school holidays lift demand on both flights and island ferries.
For ordinary city breaks, start comparing roughly four to eight weeks ahead. For peak summer and fixed island connections, look earlier and consider flexible travel days.
Baggage and fare details
European low-cost fares may only include a small personal item. If you need a cabin suitcase, checked bag, seat selection or priority boarding, add those costs before deciding that one option is cheaper.
Also check whether your ticket allows changes. A slightly higher flexible fare can be worth it when ferry times or hotel dates are not fully fixed.
Athens planning after you land
If Athens is your final stop, choose your neighbourhood before booking activities. Plaka and central stays reduce metro and taxi time for sightseeing. For island add-ons, check ferry schedules from Piraeus or Rafina before locking the hotel.
Use the Athens stays guide for neighbourhoods, the Crete stays guide for island resort bases, the Santorini route guide for island onward flights, then compare Athens experiences. Car hire is rarely needed in the city but can help for mainland road trips.
