Istanbul Airport (IST) versus Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
Istanbul Airport (IST) north-west of the European side is the main long-haul and full-service gateway. Metro and Havaist coaches reach Taksim and the old city; taxis are plentiful and traffic-sensitive. Partner searches may use IST or a city label — confirm the three-letter code.
Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side suits many low-cost European hops. It can be convenient for Kadıköy or Asian-side hotels and a long, bridge-crossing grind into Sultanahmet. A cheaper SAW fare plus 90 minutes of traffic is not cheaper. Allow 60–90 minutes at peak times whichever airport you use.
Istanbul airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Transfer to centre / resort | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul (IST) | Most UK / full-service | Metro / bus / taxi toward Taksim or Old City — often 45–90 min | Large airport; traffic can stretch transfers |
| Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) | Some low-cost calendars | Longer hop to European-side hotels | Often farther door-to-door for Sultanahmet / Beyoğlu |
Airport transfers — quick guide
- IST: Allow generous transfer time into Taksim or the Old City — traffic matters more than the map.
- SAW: Price the Asian-side transfer before a cheap ticket beats IST.
Non-stop versus a connection
From the UK and much of Europe, both IST and SAW see non-stops. A connection via a Gulf hub is rarely useful for a city break from western Europe. From farther away, IST is a genuine long-haul hub — true through-tickets here are different from a self-transfer between SAW and IST on two bookings.
Do not plan a tight IST–SAW self-transfer. That is a city crossing, not a connection. If you continue to Cappadocia or the coast, a domestic flight from IST is usually cleaner than dragging bags to SAW.
When Istanbul is busy
Spring and autumn are popular for walking weather. Summer is hot and busy around Sultanahmet. Ramadan and major public holidays change restaurant hours and some schedules — they do not automatically mean cheaper seats. New Year and UK school holidays lift demand from Europe.
There are no live fares on this page. Mid-week European returns often beat Sunday nights. Add bags and the airport-to-hotel transfer before you rank tickets.
Metro, Havaist and the last mile
From IST, metro plus a change can reach the centre cheaper than a taxi; Havaist coaches are simpler with bags toward Taksim. From SAW, coaches and taxis toward Kadıköy or the bridge are the usual story. Night arrivals into Sultanahmet with two cases still argue for a taxi or a booked transfer.
Stay in Sultanahmet for first-time monument density; Karaköy and Beyoğlu for evenings; Kadıköy if you landed at SAW on purpose. A cheap Asian-side room after an IST arrival is a long first night.
Bags, visas and stays
Low-cost SAW tickets are often personal-item only. Gulf and Turkish full-service fares into IST more often include a hold bag — compare the bundle. Check entry rules for your passport; many visitors use an e-visa, but that is not universal and it is not a fare condition.
Use the Istanbul stays guide once the airport is fixed. Related hops: Dubai–Istanbul and London–Istanbul. Do not treat SAW and IST as interchangeable on the booking screen.
European side or Asian side — the airport is the first decision
Sultanahmet first-timers should push hard for IST and a Havaist or taxi plan, not a late SAW inbound across the bridge. Kadıköy and the Asian shore can make SAW the honest airport. Couples who want both sides of the Bosphorus should still pick one airport and one first hotel, then cross by ferry the next day with day bags.
Long-haul connections belong at IST on a through-ticket. A cheap SAW city-break fare is fine if you meant it. It is not fine as a hidden extra on a “Istanbul” search you did not read. Check e-visa rules before you pack, not at the gate.
