Pick your Bali zone first, then book

Each section explains the areas first — then hand-picked stays. SkyStayTravel never adds fees at partner checkout.

One island, several very different holidays

Bali isn't a single destination so much as a collection of them, and choosing the right region is the key to a good trip. Inland Ubud is the cultural and wellness heart — rice terraces, temples, yoga retreats and jungle spas. The southern beaches split into the lively surf-and-dining strips of Seminyak and Canggu, the calmer family resorts of Nusa Dua and Sanur, and the clifftop drama of the Bukit peninsula around Uluwatu. The catch is that traffic between regions is heavy and slow, so trying to "do" the whole island from one base usually means long hours in a car.

The smarter approach is to pick one or two regions that match your trip — or split your nights, classically a few in Ubud followed by a beach stretch. Here's how the main areas feel and who each one suits.

Traveller tip: Culture / wellness → Ubud (no beach). Beach clubs + dining → Seminyak. Surf / cafés → Canggu. Families / calmer sea → Nusa Dua or Sanur. Cliffs + surf views → Bukit (car-dependent). Pair inland nights with a coastal stretch.

Ubud

Ubud is for culture and wellness — rice-terrace walks, temples, art markets and retreat-style stays among the greenery, with calmer evenings and no beach. It pairs beautifully with a coastal stretch afterward. Scooter or driver; Monkey Forest Road is a queue after 10:00 — a warung on Jalan Raya Ubud for lunch, Tegallalang early.

Seminyak and Canggu

Seminyak is the polished beach-and-lifestyle base — beach clubs, boutiques, sunset bars and strong dining — while neighbouring Canggu is its more bohemian, surf-and-café cousin, popular with younger travellers and digital nomads. Jalan Kayu Aya at sunset, then eat a street inland, not a beach-club table at 19:00 in July. Canggu: Batu Bolong for a warung breakfast, Echo Beach at sunset — not Seminyak brunch prices.

Nusa Dua and Sanur

For families and a calmer sea, Nusa Dua offers gated resort comfort with gentle swimming, and Sanur brings a relaxed, low-rise seafront with a flat promenade good for all ages. Nusa Dua: hotel breakfast then the sand before 10:00 — eat on the promenade, not a taxi to Seminyak at dinner with kids. Sanur: Jalan Danau Tamblingan; promenade walk at 07:00 then a warung, not a beachfront at 13:00.

Bukit peninsula

The Bukit peninsula in the far south — Uluwatu, Bingin and the cliffs — delivers world-class surf, dramatic clifftop villas and white-sand coves, ideal for surfers and couples wanting views, though it's more spread out and car-dependent. Uluwatu temple before sunset; a simple warung at Bingin or Padang Padang, not a clifftop table without a taxi plan.

Typical mid-range stays are approximately £80–£130 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a beach hotel in Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur. This is accommodation only and does not include meals, transfers or villa-only extras. Ubud retreats and Bukit cliff villas often climb above that band.

Arriving at DPS and getting around

Almost everyone lands at Ngurah Rai International (DPS), conveniently close to Kuta and Seminyak; allow roughly 45–90 minutes onward to Ubud or the Bukit depending on traffic, which can be intense. Long-haul flights from the UK generally connect via the Gulf or Singapore — see London → Bali flights for the options, and Bangkok → Bali if you're planning a multi-city trip.

Getting around is where Bali surprises people: there's no real public transport, so most visitors hire a private driver for day trips (inexpensive and easy to arrange) or use ride-hailing apps where permitted. Scooters are everywhere but the roads are busy and accidents common, so only ride if you're confident and properly insured. Factor transfer times — and any villa cleaning or service fees — into the real cost of a stay, not just the nightly rate.

When to go, and when rooms cost less

The dry season from April to October is the prime window — sunny, less humid and best for the beaches and surf — and it's also the busiest, with Ubud retreats and coastal villas booking up well ahead for July and August. The wet season (November to March) brings warm rain showers, lush scenery and noticeably lower rates, especially outside the Christmas and New Year peak. The shoulder months at either end often give the best balance of weather and value.

Best for a first visit

Split nights if you can: Ubud for rice terraces and a slower morning, Seminyak or Canggu for beach clubs and dinner. Do not treat the island as one walkable town. DPS traffic is the transfer; a villa up a lane needs a driver, not a fantasy scooter after a long-haul night. Wet-season afternoons are downpours, not a reason to skip the trip if you want spa days.

Bangkok is a popular add-on, not a same-day bounce. Compare with Phuket if the question is Andaman swimming vs Bali villages. Ask SkyStay about Bali if families need a south-coast resort instead of Canggu.

Best for families

Nusa Dua or Sanur still win: calmer water, promenades, fewer scooters at the door. Ubud is culture and stairs. Canggu is a party village with kids in the mix — possible, not restful.

Best for evenings

Seminyak and Canggu for dinner and bars; Ubud is earlier. A villa on a main strip looks convenient and then runs scooters all night. Driver home beats a scooter after dark.

Bali stays FAQs

Ubud or Seminyak?

Ubud for culture, rice terraces and wellness retreats (no beach); Seminyak or Canggu for beach clubs, dining and social evenings. Many travellers split their nights between the two.

Which area is best for families?

Nusa Dua for gated resorts and calm swimming, or Sanur for a relaxed, low-rise seafront with an easy promenade. Both are gentler than the surf beaches.

Scooter or private driver?

Most visitors use an affordable private driver for day trips. Scooters are common but the roads are hazardous — only ride if experienced and insured.

Can I combine Bali with Bangkok?

Yes — it's a popular multi-city route. See our Bangkok → Bali guide for routing ideas and connections.

When is the cheapest time to visit?

The wet season (November–March, outside the festive peak) brings the lowest rates and greenest scenery, with warm showers rather than all-day rain. The dry season is pricier and busier.

Ubud or Seminyak for a first stay?

Ubud for temples and rice terraces if you accept no beach; Seminyak if beach clubs and west-coast sunsets are the point — many visitors split nights.

Nusa Dua or Sanur with kids?

Both work for calmer swimming. Nusa Dua for gated resort layout; Sanur for a low-rise promenade without the Seminyak nightlife.
