Pick your beach first: Phuket is a coast-by-coast choice
Phuket rewards travellers who treat bay choice as the booking decision, not an afterthought. Distances are real: a late arrival into HKT followed by a taxi to the far south can eat the first evening, and a cheap room in the wrong strip quietly costs you in transfers every day. For a classic UK winter-sun week — warmth, swimming and evenings that don't need a nightclub — start with the calmer west-coast resorts and leave Patong as an optional night out, not the base.
If you are staying two or three weeks, the wrong bay bites harder: you want a pool you will actually use, spa or golf within a short drive, and restaurants you can walk to without negotiating Bangla Road every evening. Here's how the main coasts compare for that kind of trip.
Best areas to stay in Phuket
Traveller tip: Pick the bay before the hotel photo. Quiet winter week → Kata/Karon or Bang Tao. Near HKT and stillness → Mai Khao/Nai Yang. Patong is a night out for most UK stays, not the default pin.
| Area | Best for | Transfer | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kata / Karon | First visit, swim + walkable strip | ~45–70 min from HKT | Busier than the north |
| Bang Tao / Kamala | Resort space, spa, golf | West coast taxi | Dearer in dry season |
| Mai Khao / Nai Yang | Quiet near airport | ~15 min from HKT | Fewer walkable restaurants |
| Patong | Nightlife / shopping strip | Central west | Noise if you need sleep |
Kata and Karon
Kata and Karon are the easiest all-round bases for a first winter visit: proper swimmable beaches, a sensible spread of restaurants and calmer evenings than the centre of the island. They suit pairs and solo travellers who want a day-to-day rhythm without feeling stranded. Taxi from HKT about 45–70 minutes; Kata breakfast then the sand before 10:00, not Patong at lunch — Karon viewpoint at sunset.
Bang Tao and Kamala
Slightly north, Bang Tao (including the Laguna complex) and Kamala lean more resort — bigger pools, spa menus and golf nearby — the natural fit for a longer, quieter week when comfort matters more than bargains. Laguna shuttle; a market meal inland, not a beach-club table at 19:00.
Mai Khao and Nai Yang
For genuine stillness, the long northern sands of Mai Khao and Nai Yang sit close to the airport: empty beaches, nature reserves and early starts for the flight home. They work well for a restful second week or anyone who treats Phuket as recovery after Bangkok nights. Fifteen minutes from HKT; seafood at Nai Yang, not a 70-minute taxi to Patong for dinner.
Patong
Patong remains the island's busiest strip — shopping, nightlife and hotels at every price — useful if a lively evening is the point, and noisy if sleep is. Many winter visitors base in Kata or Bang Tao and visit Patong once rather than living on it. Eat on a soi off Thaweewong; Bangla Road is after 22:00, not lunch.
Typical mid-range stays are approximately £70–£120 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a solid mid-range hotel in Kata, Karon or quieter edges of Patong. This is accommodation only and does not include meals, transfers or resort extras. Bang Tao and Laguna resorts usually cost more, especially in the November–April dry season.
