Sailing bay and boat trip off the Majorca coast

Majorca activities guide

Tours & things to do in Majorca

Majorca is more than beach clubs. Palma delivers cathedral, harbour and old-town evenings; the east coast runs on cave concerts and calmer coves; the Tramuntana suits guided hikes and village stops. Palma airport feeds most UK flights — match the activity list to where you are sleeping before you buy tickets.

A Majorca week splits between Palma city time, east-coast caves, boat days from different harbours, and the Tramuntana hills. This guide is for people who will otherwise buy three similar catamarans. It covers Caves of Drach timing, which marina actually serves your resort, Sóller train logic, family parks versus quieter couple days, and cruise-ship mornings in Palma that make the cathedral feel like a concourse.

Palma days and cruise-ship mornings

Palma walking tours suit short city breaks, fly-and-flop weeks with one urban day, and anyone whose hotel is in the capital. The cathedral, old town and harbour sit close together; you do not need a coach. Cruise-ship days pack the same streets before lunch — if your dates overlap a busy call, go early or go late, or swap the cathedral for a neighbourhood lunch in Santa Catalina.

Food walks and tapas evenings work when the beach week needs a night that is not a hotel buffet. If you are staying in Magaluf or Playa de Palma, Palma is still an easy bus or taxi, but a 23:00 return after a tasting menu is a different budget from a resort show. Book one Palma evening, not three, unless the city is the holiday.

Caves, coves and the east

Caves of Drach and similar east-coast shows are timed entry with a small concert attached. Transfers from the south-west resorts eat the morning; from the east or from Porto Cristo they are a local outing. Plan the ticket around the coach, not around a swim you hoped to fit before lunch. Combined cave-and-beach days sound efficient and often feel rushed.

Calmer coves on the east and at Mondragó suit snorkel mornings. They are not the same as a west-coast cliff boat. If your hotel is in Alcúdia or Cala Millor, east-coast water is the point; if you are in Palma Nova, a local sail may be happier than a cross-island cave. Read duration and whether lunch is a sandwich you did not want.

Boats from Palma, Alcúdia and Sóller

Boat products range from party catamarans to quiet cove hops. Palma, Alcúdia, Port de Sóller and smaller harbours all sell “Majorca boat trip” in the same marketplace. The harbour in the title is the product. A west-coast sail from Palma does not show you the Formentor side. Confirm pickup: some listings meet at the quay and assume you can get there.

Sea state in spring and autumn can shorten trips. Keep a pool day spare. Family boats with a swim stop and a bar are loud; smaller groups cost more and feel like a different island. If anyone is prone to seasickness, mornings on the more sheltered east are kinder than a wind-against-current west-coast afternoon.

Tramuntana, Sóller and hiking

The Sóller train from Palma is a classic half-day: wooden carriages, a mountain tunnel, then the tram to the port. It sells out on some summer mornings. A guided Tramuntana day adds villages, a viewpoint and a longer lunch — useful if you do not want to hire a car on hairpins. Serious walkers should pick a hiking product with distance stated, not a “scenic mountains” coach with twelve photo stops.

Self-drive in the Tramuntana is beautiful and slow. Parking in Deià and Valldemossa fills. If you only have one hill day from a south resort, start early or take the organised version. Do not stack the train, a cave concert and a sunset sail on the same date. Majorca is larger than the transfer time on the package brochure implies.

Families, couples and when it fills

Magaluf, Palmanova and Playa de Palma favour water parks, jeep tours and easy half-day boats. Couples often prefer Palma food walks, quieter sails and a Tramuntana day. Package hotels may sit on pickup routes for full-day excursions — or they may not. Check the listing, not the rep’s confidence at the welcome meeting.

July and August school holidays push cave and boat demand. May, June and September still feel beach-ready with shorter queues. The Majorca stays guide settles Palma versus the bays; London to Palma and Manchester to Palma cover the flight. Book Drach or Sóller against a day that is not your landing evening at PMI.

Majorca activities FAQs

Is Palma worth a day if I am in Magaluf?

Yes, once. The cathedral, old town and harbour are a different island from the strip. A late-morning start avoids the worst cruise queues; an evening food walk is the other good version. You do not need a second Palma day unless you are actually staying in the city.

Do I need a hire car for activities?

Not for boats and cave tours that include hotel pickup from your belt. Yes for flexible cove-hopping, inland towns and Tramuntana viewpoints on your own clock. Hairpin roads and summer parking are the reasons some visitors are happier on one organised mountain day instead.

When do Caves of Drach sell out?

Peak school holidays and some cruise-linked days. Timed entry means a missed coach is a missed concert. If your dates are locked in July or August, buy the ticket before you fly and treat the transfer time as part of the experience, not a surprise.

Sóller train or a Tramuntana coach?

The train is the charming half-day from Palma. A Tramuntana coach or hiking day covers more villages and viewpoints if you are based in a resort and do not want to navigate the hairpins. They are not duplicates — pick the one that matches how long you want to be on the road.
