One island, three holiday moods

Majorca (Mallorca) folds cathedral city breaks, sheltered north-coast coves and purpose-built resort bays into a short flight from the UK. Palma suits couples and culture-first weekends — cathedral lanes, harbour walks and late tapas without committing to a pool-only week. The Serra de Tramuntana north feeds Deià, Sóller and Port de Pollença with pine-scented drives and calmer sand. East and south coasts — Alcúdia, Cala Millor, Palmanova — trade character for wide beaches, kids' clubs and package-hotel convenience. A single base rarely covers all three without long transfers.

Traveller tip: Choose the coast before the hotel photo. Culture hub → Palma. Family sand → Alcúdia or Cala Millor. Scenery → Port de Pollença or Deià (car helps). Magaluf is nightlife — not the quiet default.

Palma

For a first visit, Palma keeps cathedral, old-town lanes and easy day trips by bus or hire car. Plaça d'Espanya buses; an ensaimada on Carrer de Sant Miquel before the cathedral, not a sit-down on the Passeig at 13:00 — Mercat de l'Olivar is morning.

Alcúdia and Cala Millor

Family pools usually mean Alcúdia or Cala Millor for shallow bays, promenades and resort infrastructure. Bus from Palma about an hour to Port d'Alcúdia; promenade lunch, then the old-town walls — not Magaluf prices. Cala Millor: breakfast on the front, sand before 10:00.

Port de Pollença and Deià

Couples and scenery head to Port de Pollença or Deià for Tramuntana views — accept narrower beaches and hill roads. Pine Walk at sunset then a side-street supper, not the front at 21:00 in August. Deià wants a hire car or the Sóller train then a bus; eat in the village at lunch, not after dark on the hill road.

Magaluf and Palmanova

Nightlife means Magaluf and Palmanova for late bars — book away from the strip if you want quieter nights. TIB bus from Palma; eat inland of Punta Ballena, not on it at 23:00 if you want sleep.

Ibiza — old town, party beaches and calm east coast

Ibiza pairs whitewashed Ibiza Town below the Dalt Vila walls with the open-air clubs of Playa d'en Bossa and the calmer, spa-led Santa Eulària on the east coast — pick the side of the island that matches your week. Ferries and short flights link it with Palma in a few hours, so a Majorca week can fold in a few nights here without flying home first.

Whitewashed old town, party beaches or a calm spa base — Ibiza (IBZ) is a short hop or ferry from Majorca.

Menorca — Ciutadella, south coves and Maó harbour

Traveller tip: West old town → Ciutadella. South coves → Cala Galdana strip. Harbour capital → Maó. Quietest Balearic.

Menorca is the quiet Balearic: Ciutadella's golden old town at the west end, sheltered south-coast coves like Cala Galdana, and the Georgian capital Maó over the harbour at the east. Inter-island ferries and short hops connect all three airports, so you can fly into one island and home from another.

Recommended stays in Menorca

Quieter and greener than its neighbours — Menorca (MAH) suits Ciutadella old town, a south-coast beach or the capital, Maó.

PMI airport and getting around

Palma de Mallorca (PMI) sits south-west of the city — roughly fifteen minutes to Palma hotels, forty-five to an hour to Alcúdia or Cala Millor in traffic. Buses radiate from Palma’s intermodal station; resort corridors run shuttles in peak season. Tramuntana villages need a car or organised tours — parking in Palma old town is limited, so confirm hotel drop-off before booking inside the walls.

Airports across the Balearics: PMI, IBZ and MAH

Each island has its own airport with direct UK flights in season. Palma (PMI) is the busiest and cheapest to reach, with the widest choice of routes. Ibiza (IBZ) sits five minutes from Playa d'en Bossa and about fifteen from Ibiza Town. Menorca (MAH) is small and ten minutes from Maó, with fewer direct links — many travellers route via Palma or Barcelona. From the UK, compare flights from your home airport to whichever island matches your base, or build a two-island trip by flying into one and out of another.

Package holidays for Majorca

Majorca is one of the densest UK short-haul package markets for a reason: flight and hotel stock into Palma (PMI) is deep, and many east- and south-coast resorts are built for bundled stays. Booking flight + hotel together often makes more sense when you want a resort base — Alcúdia, Cala Millor, Palmanova — where kids’ clubs, board basis and shuttle logistics are part of the product, rather than stitching a boutique Palma stay and a separate ticket yourself.

A typical Majorca package from the UK pairs a return into PMI with a set number of nights on a chosen board (B&B through all-inclusive). Transfers are not automatic: some bundles include an airport coach; others leave you to taxi or bus. That matters here — Palma hotels are roughly fifteen minutes from PMI, while Alcúdia or Cala Millor can run forty-five minutes to an hour in traffic. Confirm the resort zone on the package before you pay, so you are not paying city-break rates for a strip hotel, or sitting through a long transfer when you wanted cathedral evenings in Palma.

Packages often earn their keep in July and August school holidays, when separate hotel and seat inventory both tighten. Shoulder weeks in May, June and September still work for swimming weather with lighter resort crowds. If you prefer Palma old town or Tramuntana scenery (Port de Pollença, Deià), building the stay and flight separately can still be cleaner — those areas are less “package hotel” by nature. For classic resort weeks, compare live flight + hotel options on Expedia and check board basis, baggage and whether a transfer is included.

Prefer to choose the hotel first? Use the recommended stays above, then match flights separately via London → Palma or Manchester → Palma. For the wider hub, see package holidays.

When Majorca hotels price better

Easter and UK school holidays lift Alcúdia and Palmanova together. Late spring and early autumn balance warm water with calmer pools and easier restaurant reservations in Palma. Christmas and winter city breaks in Palma can be good value — most resort pools close or run reduced hours outside the main season.

Typical mid-range stays are approximately €125–€160 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide.

Majorca stays FAQs

Palma or a beach resort?

Palma for culture and dining; Alcúdia or Cala Millor for classic family beach weeks with minimal driving.

Is the north coast worth a base?

Yes for scenery and hiking — plan on a hire car and smaller beaches rather than wide resort sand.

Do package holidays include transfers?

Check on the partner site — some bundles include airport coaches; independent stays may need taxi or bus planning from PMI.

Can I combine two islands in one trip?

Yes — ferries link Palma with Ibiza, and short flights connect all three islands. Flying into one airport and home from another avoids backtracking.

Should I base in Magaluf?

Only if nightlife is the point. Quieter winter or family weeks usually feel better in Palma, Alcúdia or the north, with Magaluf as a night out.

Do I need a hire car in Majorca?

Not for Palma or many resort strips with bus links. A car helps for Deià, Tramuntana days and hopping quieter coves.
