Vienna rewards first-timers who accept crowds inside the Ring and then sleep somewhere with a U-Bahn. Non-stops from several London airports make the airborne part simple. The trip fails when you land at 22:30, skip the CAT, and discover the hotel is up a lane that taxis dislike. Leopoldstadt and Neubau forgive that; the most photogenic Innere Stadt addresses often do not.
Connections via Frankfurt or Munich are rarely necessary. Take them only if they restore a cabin bag you need. Festival weeks are a different product from a random March Tuesday.
Which London airport actually fits
Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted all appear on Vienna searches. None is reliably cheapest. Count the train from home plus the airline’s bag rules. A cheaper Stansted fare from Richmond can lose to a Heathrow ticket once you add the last Tube and the 04:30 alarm.
