How to think about this route
Non-stops dominate this corridor and competition keeps frequencies high. The useful comparison is total door-to-door time from your LA neighbourhood — LAX, Burbank (BUR) and Orange County (SNA) serve different travellers — not only block time in the air.
Before choosing, compare the full journey: travel to the airport, security time, arrival borough transfer and check-in time at your hotel.
Airlines on this route
British Airways, American, Delta, Virgin Atlantic, JetBlue and others appear. Compare JFK, EWR and LGA against your hotel borough.
Los Angeles airport choices
Los Angeles International (LAX) is the primary origin for most transcontinental schedules. Burbank (BUR) and John Wayne (SNA) appear on some tickets — factor drive time from home before judging price.
Red-eye flights can save a hotel night if you sleep on board. April through May and September through October often soften fares versus peak summer.
New York arrival airports
JFK suits most transcontinental arrivals and has good onward options to Manhattan and Brooklyn. Newark (EWR) can work well from west Manhattan and New Jersey via AirTrain. LaGuardia (LGA) appears on some domestic tickets — match airport to your hotel borough.
Factor NYC hotel taxes and resort-style fees into your budget — they sit outside the flight quote.
New York airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Transfer to centre / resort | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| JFK | Many UK / long-haul | AirTrain + subway / taxi — often 45–90 min to Midtown | Busy; traffic and AirTrain changes |
| Newark (EWR) | Strong for Midtown / west side | AirTrain + NJ Transit / taxi ~40–75 min | Not Manhattan — factor the hop |
| LaGuardia (LGA) | Some domestic connections / shorter US hops | Taxi / bus toward Midtown ~30–60 min | Fewer UK non-stops |
Airport transfers — quick guide
- JFK: AirTrain + subway is cheapest; taxis/Uber help with bags and late arrivals.
- EWR: Useful for Midtown — still price the New Jersey hop.
- LGA: Closer to some Manhattan pins but check if your UK itinerary actually lands there.
When to compare and book
Peak summer and Thanksgiving lift both fares and hotel demand. Shoulder weeks in spring and autumn often help if your dates flex.
For ordinary city breaks, start comparing roughly four to eight weeks ahead. For school holidays and fixed event dates, look earlier and consider flexible travel days.
Baggage and fare details
US domestic basic economy may exclude a full-size cabin bag or charge for seat selection — read fare rules on the results page before you pay. TSA PreCheck or Global Entry reduce peak-hour stress if you fly this corridor often.
Also check whether your ticket allows changes. A slightly higher flexible fare can be worth it when hotel dates or meetings are not fully fixed.
New York planning after you land
If New York is your final stop, choose your borough before booking activities. Midtown and downtown stays reduce subway and taxi time. Returning west later? Pair with our Los Angeles stays guide for neighbourhood picks.
