Open a Stay22 map centred on each LA sleep base — Santa Monica, West Hollywood or Hollywood — then refine dates and budget.

Coast, studios and sprawl across freeways

Los Angeles is less a single centre than a string of neighbourhoods separated by freeway minutes. Santa Monica suits beach-led breaks with pier walks and coastal dining; West Hollywood sits central to multiple districts but still needs rideshare planning; Hollywood feeds studio tours and entertainment weekends; Downtown works for short event stays with patchy walkability. A cheap Valley room can cost ninety minutes daily in rush-hour traffic.

Traveller tip: First visit → Santa Monica for beach mornings (Expo Line). Central pockets → West Hollywood. Studio / show corridors → Hollywood. Families → Santa Monica or Pasadena. Downtown only when your venue is locked — plan rideshare or hire from day one.

Santa Monica

For a first visit, Santa Monica delivers beach mornings; Expo Line to Downtown Santa Monica; the Promenade then Main Street for lunch, not a sit-down on the Pier at 13:00. Families often prefer Santa Monica or Pasadena for space and calmer evenings.

West Hollywood

West Hollywood keeps you central to multiple pockets. Rideshare to Santa Monica Boulevard; eat on Melrose after 20:00, not a Sunset Strip table when parking is the evening.

Hollywood

Entertainment weekends belong in Hollywood for studio tours and show corridors. Metro B Line to Hollywood/Highland; Walk of Fame is a morning — skip a table facing the Chinese Theatre at noon.

Pasadena and Downtown

Metro A Line to Memorial Park; Old Pasadena for lunch, not Hollywood Boulevard with kids at 15:00. Short events suit Downtown only when your venue is locked — plan rideshare or hire from day one. Metro to 7th Street/Metro Center; Grand Central Market is lunch, not a rooftop if your venue is 19:00.

San Francisco — hills, fog and bay views

Traveller tip: First visit → Union Square / downtown. Character → Mission. Tourist bay → Fisherman's Wharf / North Beach. Compact vs LA sprawl.

A quick flight or a scenic drive up the coast, San Francisco is a complete change of pace from LA — compact, walkable and wrapped in fog and Victorian charm. Nob Hill delivers the city's best views and cable-car access. Fisherman's Wharf suits families with Alcatraz tours and waterfront dining on the doorstep. Union Square anchors shopping and transit for theatre weekends. Pack a layer — summer is the foggy season here.

Up the coast

Recommended stays in San Francisco

An hour's flight north — fog, cable cars and bay views. Base on classic Nob Hill, by the waterfront at Fisherman's Wharf, or central in Union Square for shopping and transit.

San Diego — beaches and an easy pace

Traveller tip: Postcard → Coronado. Walkable downtown → Gaslamp. Beaches → La Jolla / Pacific Beach. Easy pace, reliable sun.

Down toward the Mexican border, San Diego is California at its most relaxed — reliable sunshine, big beaches and a walkable downtown. Coronado island is the bucket-list beach-resort address across the bay. The Gaslamp Quarter anchors downtown nightlife and convention trips. Up the coast in upscale La Jolla, village hotels overlook the cove with Mediterranean charm — great for families and couples alike.

Down the coast

Recommended stays in San Diego

Southern California's easygoing beach city. Base on Coronado's resort island, in the buzzing downtown Gaslamp Quarter, or up the coast in upscale La Jolla.

LAX traffic, rideshare and when to hire

LAX is the main international hub — allow generous buffer for peak-hour runs to the coast, Downtown or the Valley. Metro helps in pockets but rarely replaces driving for typical first visits. Book car hire when your itinerary crosses neighbourhoods daily; keep Santa Monica base if the beach is the anchor.

When Los Angeles hotels price better

March–May and September–November suit most neighbourhoods without summer inland heat. June gloom often affects coastal mornings; awards season and major conventions move West Hollywood and Beverly Hills inventory quickly. Compare refundable rates when event dates may shift.

Getting around California

The three cities are far apart, so most people fly between them — LA to San Francisco or San Diego is roughly a 90-minute hop, and all three have major airports (LAX, SFO, SAN). The classic Pacific Coast Highway drive links LA and San Francisco over a scenic day or two if you have time. You'll want a car in LA and around San Diego's spread-out beaches, but central San Francisco is best on foot, cable car and rideshare.

Typical mid-range stays are approximately US$180–US$220 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide.

Best for a first visit

Santa Monica for a beach-led first stay with a walkable pier and a saner LAX transfer than people expect. West Hollywood if you need a central pin across districts and you accept that LA is a car city. Downtown is for a specific agenda, not a first-timer default. Yes, you usually need a car — rideshare stacks up faster than the hire if every day is a different neighbourhood.

San Francisco is a hop, not an afternoon. San Diego is a different base (Coronado, Gaslamp, La Jolla). Las Vegas is the show add-on if that is actually in the plan.

Best for families

Santa Monica or a hotel with a pool and parking beats a stylish WeHo walk-up. Theme parks are a different trip from a two-night Santa Monica stay — do not stack them as an afterthought. A hire car is the honest family tool.

Best for evenings

West Hollywood for dinner and bars; Santa Monica is earlier. Downtown has a nightlife that is not the beach. Parking and a designated driver matter more than the listing photo.
