Humberto Delgado (LIS) only
Humberto Delgado (LIS) north of the centre is the airport for a Lisbon stay. Metro line Vermelha (red) reaches Alameda and Saldanha; change for Baixa-Chiado or Cais do Sodré. AeroBus and taxis cover late evenings. There is no useful second Lisbon airport.
Porto (OPO) and Faro (FAO) are different trips. A cheap Faro fare is an Algarve holiday. A cheap Porto fare is northern Portugal. Confirm LIS on the ticket before you book an Alfama walk-up.
Direct from Europe versus a connection
From the UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Germany, Lisbon is typically a non-stop of about two and a half hours. A stopover via Madrid or Paris is rarely worth it on a city break. From North America, TAP and partners often sell non-stops or one-stops; compare total time against a New York or Boston connection.
If you want Porto as well, the fast train is usually cleaner than a second flight. If you want the Algarve, a LIS–FAO hop or a longer train both exist — still check bags, because a city-break ticket may not include a hold bag for the south.
When Lisbon fills up
March–May and September–October often balance Atlantic weather and price. July–August and New Year lift both flights and central rooms. School-holiday weeks from the UK and northern Europe fill Friday nights out of LIS.
January and November can be quieter and wetter. There are no live fares on this page. Add bags and a possible taxi uphill before you rank a low-cost ticket.
Red line, hills and trams
The metro is the default from LIS in the daytime. Trams and the 28 are for sightseeing, not airport runs with luggage. Baixa and Chiado are the usual first-night bases with fewer brutal climbs; Alfama and Bairro Alto are atmospheric and steep. Late arrivals with two cases into Alfama are a taxi job.
Uber and taxis are plentiful. A “ten minutes from the airport” hotel can still sit on the wrong side of a hill for your evening plans. Match the neighbourhood to how much you want to walk, not only to price.
Cabin bags and stays
Low-cost LIS fares are often personal-item only. Cobbles and hills make a wheeled cabin bag more useful than a giant hold suitcase you then drag up stairs. Compare a fare that includes a cabin bag with a cheaper seat plus the add-on.
Use the Lisbon stays guide and the Lisbon city-break plan once LIS is confirmed. Book Jerónimos or Belém slots on busy weekends. For London origins see London–Lisbon.
Hills, light bags, and who Lisbon rewards
Lisbon is kindest to travellers who pack a cabin bag they can carry up stairs and who stay in Baixa, Chiado or a tram-handy slope rather than the cheapest Alfama walk-up after a late LIS arrival. Couples and city-break first-timers usually love the light and the viewpoints. Families should budget taxis for the airport run and not rely on tram 28 as transport with luggage.
If you mainly want beaches and golf, Faro is the honest airport. If you mainly want the north and port wine, fly to Porto. Lisbon as a “cheap sun” search from the UK is how people end up on cobbles in the rain with a hold suitcase they cannot lift onto the metro.
