Hills, miradouros and tram 28
Lisbon stacks neighbourhoods on ridges and river bends, and the right base matters more than a tempting nightly rate. Baixa and Chiado keep flat walks and metro links — the easiest first-time pick, especially with wheelie bags. Alfama delivers fado lanes and postcard miradouros, but steep cobbles and luggage friction are real. Príncipe Real trades some views for garden squares and independent dining; Belém suits slower museum mornings away from Bairro Alto noise. A cheap room at the top of a miradouro can cost daily calf muscle.
Best areas to stay in Lisbon
Traveller tip: First visit → Baixa, Chiado or riverside flats. Fado atmosphere → Alfama / Mouraria (hills + late taxis). Families → Belém or Príncipe Real. Nightlife → Cais do Sodré / Bairro Alto — quieter street if you need sleep before Sintra.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baixa / Chiado | First visit, flatter grid | Metro Baixa-Chiado | Less old-town romance |
| Alfama / Mouraria | Fado, viewpoints | Tram 28 / walk | Hills + taxi drop-offs |
| Belém / Príncipe Real | Families, calmer evenings | Tram 15 / Metro Rato | Further from Baixa buzz |
| Cais do Sodré / Bairro Alto | Nightlife | Cais do Sodré station | Late noise |
Baixa and Chiado
For a first visit, base in Baixa, Chiado or along the riverside streets — classic sights on foot without the steepest climbs. Metro Baixa-Chiado; a standing pastel de nata on Rua Augusta before tram 28, not a sit-down on a miradouro at 11:00.
Alfama and Mouraria
Fado weekends belong in Alfama and Mouraria, where evening atmosphere is the point; accept hills and confirm taxi drop-off if you arrive late. Walk from Terreiro do Paço or ride tram 28 to Sé; eat before the show, not after 23:00 when the lanes empty of taxis.
Belém and Príncipe Real
Families often do better in Belém or Príncipe Real than on Alfama's steepest lanes. Tram 15 to Belém; Pastéis de Belém before 09:00, then the monastery — the queue after 10:30 is the whole morning. Metro Rato for Príncipe Real; downhill to Chiado on foot, not a taxi uphill with bags.
Cais do Sodré and Bairro Alto
If nightlife is the draw, Cais do Sodré and Bairro Alto buzz until late — book a quieter street if you need sleep before Sintra day trips. Cais do Sodré station; Time Out Market is lunch, not a 22:00 dinner before Pink Street.
For Lisbon, typical mid-range stays are approximately £75–£110 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide. Porto follows a similar band; Algarve resort weeks often price differently.
