Walls, gates and a quieter bay
Dubrovnik is a south-coast city break built around the Old Town walls, the marble Stradun, and boat mornings to Lokrum or the Elaphiti islands. It is not a Dubrovnik day-trip — give it real nights and its own airport plan into DBV.
Where you stay is usually a choice between sleeping inside or beside the walls, just east by the Ploče gate and cable car, or out on quieter Lapad bay. The areas are close enough that you can mix walls mornings with bay evenings — but bags, steps and peak cruise days still matter.
Best areas to stay in Dubrovnik
Traveller tip: First visit → Old Town for walls and Stradun (accept stairs and peak noise). Cable-car / east gate → Ploče. Resort bay calm → Lapad. No hire car for Old Town lanes.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Town | Walls, Stradun, first visit | Walk / limited drop-off | Stairs, peak noise, bags |
| Ploče | East gate, cable car | Short hop to walls | Less “inside the walls” feel |
| Lapad | Bay swimming, quieter nights | Bus / taxi to Old Town | Not doorstep Stradun |
Old Town
Old Town puts you inside the postcard — walls circuits, Stradun evenings and harbour boats on the doorstep. Expect stairs, limited vehicle access and peak cruise-day crowds. Ideal for first-timers who want the walls as their neighbourhood, less so with heavy luggage or light sleepers in high summer.
Ploče
Ploče, just east of the Old Town gate, softens the sleep pin while keeping walls mornings and the cable car toward Mt Srđ within easy reach. A strong compromise when you still want Old Town energy without living on the noisiest lane.
Lapad
Lapad is the bay and resort peninsula west of the centre — quieter evenings, swimming and hotel gardens, with Old Town as a deliberate bus or taxi hop. Choose it when resort calm matters more than waking inside the walls.
Wider Croatia shape sits on the Croatia planning hub. Dalmatian sibling nights live on Dubrovnik stays.
