Medina, Skala and beach — three Essaouiras
Essaouira is Marrakech's breezy Atlantic counterweight — not a medina day trip you squeeze after Jemaa el-Fnaa. Give it real nights. Base inside the medina for rampart lanes and rooftop Atlantic views, by the port and Skala for harbour walks, or on the beach south of town for surf schools. Arrive via road transfer from Marrakech (RAK) — about two and a half hours — or fly Agadir (AGA) and continue north when that is the plan.
Best areas to stay in Essaouira
Traveller tip: Atmosphere → Medina / ramparts. Surf / beach → coast strip. ~2.5h from Marrakech — breezy Atlantic counterweight, not a same-day dash.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medina | Ramparts, riads | Walkable | Wind + lanes |
| Skala / harbour | Sunset bastion walks | Ramparts | Tourist evenings |
| Beach | Surf, sand | Coast | Windy swimming |
Medina
Medina puts you inside whitewashed ramparts with riad courtyards and rooftop Atlantic views — the classic first-timer pin. Expect wind, lanes and bags that need help.
Skala / harbour
Skala and the fishing port keep bastion walks and harbour evenings on the doorstep. Suits travellers who want sea air without a beach-strip resort.
Beach
Beach south of the ramparts trades medina romance for surf schools and wide sand — wetsuit weather even in spring.
