The medina or the modern city: two ways to do Marrakech
Marrakech really comes down to one choice: do you want to sleep inside the walled medina, wrapped in the noise and romance of the old city, or in the calmer, modern districts just outside it? The medina is the Marrakech of the imagination — a labyrinth of souks, riad courtyards and the nightly theatre of Jemaa el-Fnaa — while Gueliz and Hivernage offer wide streets, cafés, easy taxis and a gentler introduction. Neither is wrong; it depends on how much atmosphere you'll trade for convenience.
It's also common to pair the city with somewhere else: Essaouira on the Atlantic for breezy ramparts and seafood, or Agadir for winter-sun resort days west of the Atlas. But the core decision is your Marrakech base, so here's how the main areas feel and who each one suits.
Best areas to stay in Marrakech
Quick decision guide
| Decision | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Stay here if… | You want souks, courtyards and Atlas day-trip energy — and will pin Medina, Gueliz / Hivernage, Palmeraie or Kasbah before the hotel photo |
| Avoid if… | You need resort silence with zero taxis, hate haggling, or booked a deep-medina riad without air-con, porter help or a WhatsApp pin after a late RAK landing |
| Best traveller profiles | First-timers / romance → Medina near Jemaa · Easy taxis + cafés → Gueliz · Pools near the walls → Hivernage · Family resort calm → Palmeraie · Calmer medina lanes → Kasbah |
| Key trade-offs | Medina atmosphere vs luggage logistics; Gueliz ease vs souk doorstep; Hivernage pools vs maze romance; Palmeraie calm vs daily taxi into town |
| Souks + Jemaa on foot | Medina riad (porters + clear directions) |
| Grid streets + cafés | Gueliz |
| Pool near the walls | Hivernage |
| Lowest room rate only | Only if you accept a far pin or summer heat — don’t default to a bargain deep-souk riad without GPS after midnight |
Airport → base guide
| Need | Best option | Typical expectation | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest into centre | RAK → taxi or pre-booked private transfer | ~15–30 min door-to-door when traffic cooperates | Medina: drop at nearest gate / square — not the riad door |
| Cheapest transfer | Petit taxi from the official rank — agree fare before you sit | Budget ride; short hop into Gueliz / Hivernage | Meters rare; unmarked approaches after late landings are the trap |
| Best for families | Pre-booked private transfer to Hivernage or Palmeraie (lifts / pool) | One clear bag move, no late maze scramble | Kids + deep-medina riad after midnight is the classic first-night fail |
| Medina / Kasbah riad | Taxi or transfer to Jemaa, Bab Doukkala or Kasbah edge + porters | Short road, then a walk with bags | Save the WhatsApp pin offline — GPS pins often sit one lane off |
| Gueliz / Hivernage / Palmeraie | Taxi or booked transfer to the hotel door | Straightforward drop; Palmeraie ~20 min | Agree the fare or book ahead — don’t haggle exhausted at the kerb |

Traveller tip: First trip / romance → medina riad near Jemaa (porters + WhatsApp pin). Easy taxis + cafés → Gueliz. Pools near the walls → Hivernage. Family resort calm → Palmeraie. Calmer medina lanes → Kasbah. Carry small cash and agree prices before you buy or ride.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medina riad | Atmosphere, souks, first trip | Taxi + porters | Lanes, noise, luggage logistics |
| Gueliz / Hivernage | Easy taxis, cafés, pools near walls | Doorstep taxi | Less maze romance |
| Palmeraie | Family / pool resort calm | ~20 min taxi to town | Need taxis for medina days |
| Kasbah | Calmer medina character | Taxi to Kasbah edge + walk | Still porter logistics |
Medina riad
A medina riad near Jemaa el-Fnaa is the classic, atmospheric choice — a traditional house built around a tranquil interior courtyard, often moments from the souks. The trade-off is access: cars can't reach many lanes, so you'll need porter help with luggage and clear check-in directions, and nights can be lively. It's perfect for a first trip or a romantic stay if you go in knowing what to expect. Taxi to Jemaa el-Fnaa or Bab Doukkala, then porters; orange juice on the square is morning, not the stall scrum after 21:00. Walk the souks after 16:00 when the heat drops.
Gueliz
Gueliz, the modern "new town", is the easy-navigation alternative — grid streets, cafés, galleries and straightforward taxi drops, ideal for travellers who want comfort over maze-walking. Taxi to Place du 16 Novembre; a café on Avenue Mohammed V then Jardin Majorelle in the morning, not a medina lunch with bags.
Hivernage
Hivernage, between the two, is the polished hotel-and-nightlife district, with larger properties, gardens and pools within walking distance of the medina's edge — a good fit for couples and a smoother arrival. Petit taxi to the medina wall; dinner on Avenue Echouhada if you want sleep — Jemaa el-Fnaa is the show, not the room.
Palmeraie
For pool-focused or family stays, the Palmeraie, a palm-grove zone on the outskirts, has resort hotels with space and calm, at the cost of needing a taxi into town. Taxi about 20 minutes; breakfast at the hotel, then into town before 10:00 — skip a lunch dash back at 14:00 in the heat.
Kasbah
The Kasbah quarter offers medina character with slightly calmer lanes near the Saadian Tombs and Badia — useful if you want courtyard atmosphere without sleeping hard against Jemaa el-Fnaa's late theatre. Still expect a taxi drop at the edge and a short walk with bags; save the WhatsApp pin offline. Wherever you stay, carry small cash for the souks and agree prices before you buy or ride.
Typical mid-range stays are approximately £75–£120 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a good mid-range riad or Gueliz hotel. Palmeraie resort pools and premium medina courtyards climb above that band.
Common Marrakech stay mistakes
- Deep-medina riad without GPS or porter plan. A “central” pin down pedestrian lanes after a late RAK landing becomes a bag drag — save the WhatsApp pin and confirm luggage help before you book.
- Peak summer midday walks. July–August heat punishes long souk mornings — early starts, shaded afternoons and a pool base win then.
- Day-trip overload after RAK. Atlas + Majorelle + hammam on day one erases the trip — keep the first evening light.
- Essaouira without a transfer plan. The Atlantic coast is about 2.5 hours by road — treat it as real nights or a booked transfer day, not a leftover afternoon.
- Taxi haggling exhausted at the kerb. Agree the fare before you sit, use an official rank, or pre-book a private transfer — especially after midnight with kids and cases.
- Riad on Jemaa for light sleepers. Square theatre runs late — pick a quieter Kasbah or Gueliz pin if dawn Majorelle slots matter.
- Skipping air-con on a “character” courtyard. Shoulder and summer nights still bake — confirm cooling before you lock a non-refundable rate.
- Hire car for the city only. Medina lanes and parking make a car more hassle than help — save it for Atlas or coast days.
