Hua Hin — quieter Gulf coast for longer winter weeks
Hua Hin sits on Thailand's Gulf coast as a mature resort town: a beach promenade, spa hotels, well-known golf courses and a slower evening rhythm than Phuket or Pattaya. For many UK travellers it is the winter-sun choice when comfort and rest matter more than island boat days — two or three weeks of pool mornings, a spa afternoon and dinner within a short walk of the sand.
Arrival is almost always via Bangkok. After the long-haul night you either take a private transfer of roughly three hours down the coast, or a short domestic hop into Hua Hin Airport when schedules fit. That Bangkok buffer is useful: soft-land for a city night or two, then travel on rested. The booking decision here is less about nightlife districts and more about which shoreline matches your pace — town beach for walkability, Khao Takiab for a quieter resort stretch south, or north toward Cha-am for calmer longer stays.
Best areas to stay in Hua Hin
Traveller tip: Choose the stretch before the spa photo. Walkability → town promenade. Quieter resort → Khao Takiab. Long calm weeks → north toward Cha-am.
| Area | Best for | Transfer | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Town / promenade | Walkable first week | Transfer from Bangkok or HHQ | Busiest evenings |
| Khao Takiab | Quieter resort + spa/golf | ~10–15 min taxi | Less doorstep dining |
| Cha-am / north | Longer, calmer stays | Coast hop / car helps | Further from town rhythm |
Hua Hin town and the beach promenade
Hua Hin town and the beach promenade are the easiest all-round base: restaurants and shops within walking distance, morning walks along the shore, and hotels at mid-range through premium. It suits couples and mature travellers who want an easy day-to-day rhythm without hiring a car for every meal. Train to Hua Hin station, or a transfer from Bangkok; Chatchai Market in the morning, Cicada Market on weekend evenings — a walk on the promenade at 07:00, not a sit-down facing the pier at 13:00.
Khao Takiab
South of town, Khao Takiab brings a hill temple landmark, a quieter resort strip and a slightly more spread-out feel — good when you want spa or golf pacing with less town bustle, still close enough for a short taxi into the promenade. Taxi 10–15 minutes; the hill temple before the heat, then the beach — not the night market and back at 22:00.
North toward Cha-am
Further north toward Cha-am, the coast opens out into a calmer, longer-stay mood: more space between properties, softer evenings and a natural fit for golfers or anyone treating Thailand as a multi-week comfort base rather than a short island hop. Golf in the morning, quieter beach after — not Hua Hin and Cha-am in one day with clubs. Across the region, Hua Hin works especially well for golf weeks, spa-focused breaks and couples who want quieter winter sun than Phuket's busiest bays — without the intensity that defines Pattaya.
Typical mid-range stays are approximately £60–£110 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a solid mid-range hotel near the promenade or quieter resort edges. This is accommodation only. Spa resorts and peak dry-season weeks (roughly November–April) sit higher.
