Thailand planning hub

Where should you go in Thailand?

Choose the shape before you open hotel maps. Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai each answer a different Thailand trip — city gateway, Andaman beaches, or northern temples and food.

This hub answers where to go. When you know the shape, open stays for that destination: Bangkok, Phuket, or Chiang Mai. Krabi and Hua Hin sit as beach add-ons - do not stack everything on one short break.

Quick start

Match the trip mood to a city. Links jump into the stays guide at the right section.

Thailand destination comparison

A side-by-side skim before you commit nights. Budgets are relative mid-range city stays for UK travellers — not live rates.

Destination Best for Base tip Budget feel Airports
Bangkok City gateway, temples, food, connections Sukhumvit BTS, riverside or Old Town edge Mid BKK · DMK
Phuket Andaman beaches, island boats Kata, Bang Tao or quieter north-coast pins Mid to premium HKT
Chiang Mai Temples, food, cooler hills Old City, Nimman or riverside Mid CNX (often via BKK)
Krabi Limestone bays, Railay energy Ao Nang / Railay by trip shape Mid KBV
Hua Hin Quieter Gulf coast, golf and spa Beachfront or town promenade Mid HHQ / via Bangkok

Suggested trips

Decision guidance only — not day-by-day itineraries. Lock nights before trains.

Bangkok only

Best default for a first Thailand city break. One neighbourhood pin beats bolting on a beach without spare days after long-haul.

Choose a Bangkok neighbourhood →

Phuket only

Use when Andaman beaches and boat days are the point. Strong for five to seven nights.

Choose a Phuket base →

Chiang Mai only

Northern temples, food and cooler evenings. Often reached via Bangkok — give the city gateway real nights if you land there first.

Choose a Chiang Mai base →

Bangkok + Phuket

City then beach when the calendar is generous. Fly BKK then HKT — give Bangkok real nights first.

Start with Bangkok →

Bangkok + Chiang Mai

Gateway city then the north — three to four nights each beats a one-night capital dash.

Start with Bangkok →

Beach pair later

Phuket + Krabi or a Hua Hin add-on needs more nights and clear transfers. Finish the first beach before you stack a second.

Flights into Thailand

Destination flight guides work from any origin. London pair routes stay useful for UK door-to-door decisions.

Thailand planning FAQs

Thailand-level questions only. Neighbourhood and hotel detail lives on each stays guide.

Where should I go in Thailand for a first visit?

Bangkok suits most first UK long-haul trips — temples, food and the gateway before a beach or north hop. Choose Phuket for an Andaman beach week. Save Chiang Mai for temples, food and cooler hills.

Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai?

Bangkok for city energy and connections. Phuket for beaches and island boats. Chiang Mai for northern temples and a slower pace. Combining city and beach needs spare nights.

Should I combine Bangkok with a beach?

Yes on a week or longer if you give Bangkok real nights before the hop. A rushed one-night gateway dash usually costs the evening you came for.

How many days should I spend in Thailand?

Three to four nights suits Bangkok. A Phuket beach week wants closer to seven. Chiang Mai often works in three to five. Bangkok plus one beach or north base needs about ten to fourteen nights once jet lag is counted.

What is the easiest Thailand trip from the UK?

Long-haul into Bangkok (BKK), then a domestic hop to Phuket (HKT) or Chiang Mai (CNX) when those bases are the point. Some calendars offer seasonal non-stops to Phuket.

Where do I find hotel areas for Thailand destinations?

Open Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai stays after you pick the destination. Krabi and Hua Hin wait as beach add-ons.

Do I need a car in Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai?

Not in Bangkok. Phuket often uses taxis, hotel cars or scooters. Chiang Mai is walkable in the old city with Grab for hills.
