It's about resort zones, not neighbourhoods
Las Vegas doesn't really work like other cities — there are no traditional neighbourhoods so much as resort zones, and the one that matters most is the Strip itself. Where you stay along it (or off it) shapes how much walking, rideshare and queueing your trip involves, because the distances between mega-resorts are far larger than they look and the desert heat makes them feel longer still. The other big thing to understand before you book is that the headline room rate is rarely the real price.
Almost every Strip hotel adds a daily "resort fee" plus tax on top of the advertised rate, so a cheap-looking room can end up costing noticeably more than a pricier one with lower fees. Always compare the total nightly cost, not the sticker price. With that in mind, here's how the main zones compare.
Best zones to stay in Las Vegas
Traveller tip: First visit → Center Strip for fountains, pools and shows (weekend rates bite). Events / arena → North Strip. Value + neon → Downtown / Fremont. Budget quieter → Off-Strip — build rideshare time into the plan. Factor resort fees into every quote.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Center Strip | First visit, shows, pools | Taxi / Deuce / monorail | Highest weekend rates + heat walks |
| North Strip | Arena, convention, value | Convention Center monorail | Short hop to center action |
| Downtown / Fremont | Retro neon, lower rates | Deuce / rideshare | Rideshare to Strip resorts |
| Off-Strip | Budget or quieter stays | Rideshare ~20 min | Not walkable to the action |
Center Strip
The Center Strip is the classic first-time base — the Bellagio fountains, the biggest resorts, the best pools and most of the headline shows all within (heat-permitting) walking distance. It's the liveliest and most convenient choice, and prices reflect that, especially at weekends. Taxi or rideshare from LAS; Deuce bus or monorail along the Strip. Bellagio fountains after 18:00, a slice inland of Las Vegas Boulevard, not a sit-down facing the fountains at 13:00 in July heat.
North Strip
The North Strip sits near the arena and the main convention centre, which makes it handy for events and big shows; it can offer a little more value and pool space, with a short tram or rideshare to the centre. Convention Center monorail; eat at the resort before 18:00 when lines jump.
Downtown and Fremont Street
Downtown and Fremont Street are the older, retro heart of Vegas — vintage neon, lower room rates, cheaper tables and a rowdier, more old-school atmosphere. It's the value pick and great fun for a night, though you'll rideshare to the Strip for the big resorts and shows. Deuce or rideshare; Fremont after 21:00, not 14:00 when it's empty heat.
Off-Strip
Off-Strip hotels can be cheaper still and quieter, which suits budget-minded or longer stays — just build rideshare costs and time into the plan, since you'll rely on it to reach the action. Factor twenty minutes; breakfast at the hotel, Strip after 17:00.
