Paris, Nice and Lyon on one France guide

Paris arrondissements plus easy add-on stays in Nice and Lyon — compare districts first, then curated picks below. Pin Paris first; treat Nice or Lyon as one extension unless you have spare days.

Arrondissements before room rate

Paris is walked in arrondissements, not star ratings. A 7th-base weekend keeps Eiffel and Musée d'Orsay within strolling distance; Le Marais trades quiet nights for restaurant queues worth the walk; Saint-Germain slows the pace with café terraces and bookshop lanes. Beauvais and Orly savings mean nothing if every museum day starts with a forty-minute metro.

Best areas to stay in Paris

Quick decision guide

Decision Guidance
Stay here if… You want museums, river walks and dinner on foot — and will pin an arrondissement before the brand
Avoid if… You need resort space, easy parking, or a fifth-floor walk-up after a late CDG landing
Best traveller profiles First-timers → 7th / Saint-Germain · Food weekends → Marais / Canal · Families → Luxembourg / lift · Nightlife → Bastille / Oberkampf
Key trade-offs Central walkability costs more; outer “bargains” buy Métro time; lively streets vs early Louvre slots
Museums on foot, first visit 7th / Saint-Germain / central Right Bank
Food and evening walks Le Marais / Canal Saint-Martin
Lowest room rate only Only if you accept Métro time — don’t default to Beauvais

Airport → base guide

Need Best option Typical expectation Caveat
Fastest into central Paris Orly → Left Bank taxi / Orlyval+RER · or CDG → RER B off-peak ~35–60 min door-to-door when lines run Immigration and bags stretch “fast”
Cheapest transfer RER B (CDG) or Orlybus / Orlyval+RER Budget tickets; allow connection time Late-night gaps → taxi or pre-booked transfer
Best for families Pre-booked transfer to a lift hotel near Luxembourg / 7th One bag move, no stair scramble Walk-ups after midnight with kids are the classic trap
CDG (most long-haul) Right Bank / Gare du Nord corridor often kinder RER B ~45–60+ min to centre Confirm last trains before a far Left Bank pin
Orly Left Bank / 7th / Saint-Germain often wins Often kinder door-to-door than CDG for south pins Fewer long-haul options — match the ticket
Eurostar Central Paris — already a city arrival Gare du Nord → Métro / walk Not an airport hop — plan hotel around the station walk
Beauvais Usually skip for 2–3 night breaks Long coach transfer False economy once door-to-door is counted

7th and Saint-Germain

For a first visit, the 7th arrondissement, Saint-Germain or the central Right Bank keep river walks and museum clusters within strolling distance. RER C or Métro 13 to Invalides; a croissant on rue Cler before Musée d'Orsay beats the Café de Flore queue.

Le Marais and Canal Saint-Martin

Food weekends belong in Le Marais and along Canal Saint-Martin, where bistros and late tables are worth the walk. Métro 1 to Hôtel de Ville; falafel on rue des Rosiers before Place des Vosges is a weekday lunch, not a Saturday 13:00 scrum.

Luxembourg and family bases

Families do better on quieter streets near Luxembourg Gardens, the 7th, or a calmer 15th pin with a lift — avoid bar-heavy blocks with no stairs escape. Detail: where to stay in Paris for families.

Bastille and Oberkampf

Evenings out mean Bastille edges and Oberkampf for livelier returns after dinner. Métro 5 or 8 to Bastille; eat in the 11th and walk home — do not taxi from Gare du Nord with cabin bags at 23:00 if Line 4 is still running. Detail: where to stay in Paris for nightlife.

Typical mid-range stays are approximately £110–£160 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a solid mid-range Paris base in the 7th, Marais or near Luxembourg. Riverside boutique rooms and peak-season weeks sit higher.

Common Paris stay mistakes

  1. Beauvais for a short break. Coach time often kills the fare win on a 2–3 night trip.
  2. Walk-up with no lift. Fine at noon with a cabin bag; grim after CDG at midnight or with kids.
  3. Nightlife street + early museum. Bastille / Oberkampf / Pigalle at 01:00 vs an 08:30 Louvre slot.
  4. Outer-arrondissement “bargain”. A cheap pin in the far 19th turns the weekend into Métro logistics.
  5. Hotel before timed ticket. Lock one morning sight first, then sleep within a calm walk of that slot.

Nice — Riviera bases by the water

Traveller tip: Classic seafront → Promenade des Anglais. Value / shops → Place Masséna centre. Atmosphere → Vieux Nice / Castle Hill. Easy airport tram.

Nice is built for walking, so the question is really how close to the water you want to be. The grand seafront hotels along the Promenade des Anglais deliver the classic Riviera view and easy beach access, though you pay for the position. The centre around Place Masséna and the pedestrian shopping streets is convenient and slightly better value, while the atmospheric Old Town (Vieux Nice) and the quieter Castle Hill end of the bay put you among the morning markets and narrow lanes. The airport is just a short tram or taxi ride west, which makes Nice an unusually easy city to reach.

Lyon — Presqu'île, old town and hilltop calm

Traveller tip: Central energy → Presqu'île. Old town → Vieux Lyon. Calm / views → Fourvière / Croix-Rousse. Neat district split.

Lyon splits neatly into a few characterful districts. The Presqu'île — the peninsula between the Rhône and Saône — is the lively, central choice for shopping, squares and restaurants. Across the Saône, Renaissance Vieux Lyon is the cobbled old town, all bouchons and hidden passageways, and the most atmospheric base. Above it, Fourvière hill offers calm, gardens and panoramic views a short funicular ride from the action. Wherever you stay, Lyon is a food city first — leave room for a long lunch in a traditional bouchon.

CDG, Orly and last trains

Charles de Gaulle suits most long-haul arrivals; Orly can win for Left Bank hotels if landing times align. RER B and metro lines matter more than hotel brand — confirm late-arrival taxi ranks if you land after midnight. Cars stay useless inside Paris; rent only for Loire, Normandy or Champagne after the city nights. Door-to-door detail: Paris airport to city centre.

CDG + RER B Right Bank / north-central After last RER — use taxi ranks, not optimism
Orly Left Bank / 7th / Luxembourg Count Orlybus/Orlyval + metro hops door-to-door
Eurostar · Gare du Nord Central Right Bank / Marais Not a far-north hotel that only looks “near the station”
Beauvais Only if you accept coach time False economy for most 2–3 night city breaks

When Paris hotels price better

April–June and September–October balance terrace weather with heavy demand. August empties some business districts while tourists flood central arrondissements. Fashion weeks and major fairs move the same Left Bank inventory your alert watches — book refundable rates before finalising Eurostar.

Add the Riviera and Lyon by TGV

Paris is the hub of France's superb high-speed network, which makes a multi-city trip simple. Lyon is under two hours south by TGV, centre to centre, and makes an easy overnight or weekend for its food. Nice is further — around five and a half to six hours by train, or a quick domestic flight — but rewards the journey with the Mediterranean and the Promenade des Anglais. Book TGV fares a few weeks ahead for the best prices, and you can pair Paris with the Alps-to-sea contrast of the south without ever needing a car.

Best for a first visit

First-timers should sleep where the evening walk is the point: 7th, Saint-Germain or a central Right Bank pin so the Seine is not a project. A bargain in the far 19th looking cheap on the map is how a weekend becomes Métro logistics. Lock one timed museum if you care, then pick the hotel around that morning — not the other way around. For booking order, pacing and what to skip, see Paris for first-time visitors; for safest default bases compared, see first-time visitor areas in Paris; for the wider trip-type map see best area to stay in Paris.

Eurostar into Gare du Nord is already a city arrival; CDG and Orly are not. Read door-to-door on the Paris 3-day and 5-day plan before you fall for a “twenty minutes from the airport” listing that is twenty minutes from a ring road.

Best for families

Families usually want a flatter walk, a park, and a room that is not a fifth-floor walk-up. The 7th near the Champ de Mars, Luxembourg edges, or a quieter 15th pin with a supermarket, beats a romantic attic in the Marais with no lift. Disneyland is a different trip — do not treat a two-night Louvre weekend as a park add-on. Two dated sights plus walking is the comfortable pace. Full area and hotel filters: where to stay in Paris for families.

Best for evenings

Marais, Saint-Germain and the 11th still win for dinner and a late walk. Pigalle is louder. A hotel on a famous square looks lovely at noon and grim at 1am if you need sleep before an 08:30 museum slot. Walk home if you can; that is the Paris evening, not a taxi app. Full Bastille / Oberkampf / Marais trade-offs: where to stay in Paris for nightlife.

Nice and Lyon are add-ons after the Paris base — not a second capital to plan from scratch on the same weekend.

Paris & France stays FAQs

Which arrondissement for a first visit?

7th, Saint-Germain or central Right Bank — classic sights within walking distance, fewer Métro mornings.

Is Le Marais good for families?

Strong for food walks. For early nights and a lift, quieter streets near Luxembourg or the 7th/15th often sleep better — see where to stay in Paris for families.

CDG or Orly for a Left Bank hotel?

Orly can be kinder door-to-door. CDG still wins for many long-haul schedules — compare total time to your pin, not the airport name.

Is Beauvais worth it for Paris?

Rarely on a 2–3 night city break once coach time is included.

Do Paris hotels usually have lifts?

Not always. Check for a lift if you have bags, children, or a late arrival.

How many nights in central Paris?

Three is the calm minimum for a first visit; five if you want museums without rushing.

Where to stay for nightlife?

Bastille, Oberkampf or lively Marais edges — avoid if you need sleep before early tickets. Full guide: where to stay in Paris for nightlife.

Can I use a Paris hotel as a Disneyland base?

Possible as a day trip, but it is a different rhythm. Don’t treat a Louvre weekend as a park add-on.

Do I need a car in Paris?

No — walk and Métro. Rent only for Loire, Normandy or Champagne after the city nights.

Paris then Nice or Lyon?

Lyon is under about two hours by TGV. Nice is longer by train or a short domestic flight — pick one add-on unless you have spare days.
