Medina, Port El Kantaoui and the beach strip
Sousse pairs a walkable UNESCO medina and seaside corniche with the purpose-built marina of Port El Kantaoui — beach weeks with more old-town culture than a pure resort strip. Prefer Enfidha-Hammamet (NBE), about forty-five minutes away; Tunis-Carthage (TUN) is the wrong shape for a Sousse-first week. Base on the medina and corniche for souk mornings and pool afternoons, at Port El Kantaoui for marina pools and quieter evenings, or on the beach strip for family sand and aquapark days with a short taxi back to the old town.
Best areas to stay in Sousse
Traveller tip: Old town + promenade → medina & corniche. Marina resort pace → Port El Kantaoui. Family sand → beach strip. Fly NBE (~45 min), not TUN.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medina & corniche | Souks, promenade pools | Walkable centre | Busier evenings |
| Port El Kantaoui | Marina pools, golf pace | Short taxi north | Less medina doorstep |
| Beach strip | Family sand, aquaparks | Coast south of centre | Taxi for souks |
Medina & corniche
Medina and corniche keep old-town walks and seaside pools in one base — the classic first-time Sousse pin when you want culture without giving up the beach.
Port El Kantaoui
Port El Kantaoui is a purpose-built marina with pools, dining and a quieter evening rhythm than central medina lanes — fine when resort polish matters more than souk doorstep.
Beach strip
Beach strip stays trade medina romance for wide sand and family aquaparks — short taxi to the souks after pool days.
