One capital, two coasts: how to plan a Tunisia trip
Tunis rewards travellers who think of it as a region rather than a single city. The capital itself pairs a wonderful UNESCO-listed medina with the Phoenician and Roman ruins of Carthage and the blue-and-white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said, all within easy reach of each other. But many visitors pair a few cultured nights in and around Tunis with a stretch on the coast — the thalasso-spa resorts of Hammamet, about an hour south, or the beaches and marina of Sousse, roughly two hours down.
That split is the key decision. If history and atmosphere are the draw, base yourself in the capital; if you want pool days and sea air, head for the coast resorts; and if you want both, do a few nights of each.
Best areas to stay in Tunis (and the coast)
Traveller tip: Capital atmosphere → Medina (porters + pedestrian lanes). Romance / Carthage → Sidi Bou Said. Resort pools near town → Gammarth. Classic beach week → Hammamet (fly NBE). Beach + medina → Sousse / Port El Kantaoui. Don't mix TUN and NBE airports by accident.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tunis Medina | First capital nights, riads | Taxi from TUN | Porter / lane logistics |
| Sidi Bou Said | Romance, cliff cafés, Carthage | TGM ~15 min from airport area | Coach crowds at peak |
| Gammarth | Resort pools near the capital | Taxi into city | Less souk doorstep |
| Hammamet / Sousse | Beach weeks + spa / marina | NBE (not TUN) | Different trip from Tunis city |
Tunis Medina
In the capital, the Medina is the atmospheric heart: restored riads with rooftop breakfasts, souk lanes and genuine old-town character. It's the most evocative first-time base, though many addresses sit down pedestrian lanes, so confirm porter help and check-in logistics before booking. Taxi from TUN; souks around Zitouna Mosque in the morning, a rooftop after 18:00 — not Avenue Habib Bourguiba at 13:00 with bags.
Sidi Bou Said
Sidi Bou Said, the photogenic blue-and-white village on the cliffs near Carthage, is the romantic pick — sea-view cafés and a calmer pace, about fifteen minutes from the airport. TGM to Sidi Bou Said; Carthage ruins in the morning, then a café on the cliff — not 14:00 when coaches fill the steps.
Gammarth
Gammarth, just up the coast, swaps souk intensity for resort pools and beach walks, with taxis back into the city for sightseeing. Beach morning, taxi into the Medina after 16:00 — not a TUN-to-Hammamet mix-up.
Hammamet and Sousse
Down the coast, Hammamet is Tunisia's classic beach-and-spa base — the modern Yasmine marina quarter and a long sand strip lined with thalasso resorts, ideal for relaxed family weeks or a wind-down after the capital. Fly into NBE, not TUN; old medina in the morning, Yasmine marina after 19:00 — not a day trip from Tunis with bags. Sousse combines a walkable medina and corniche with the purpose-built marina of Port El Kantaoui nearby; it suits travellers who want beach resorts with a bit of old-town culture and easy day trips to Nabeul or Monastir. NBE about 45 minutes; medina then Port El Kantaoui, not TUN at 90 minutes.
