Inverness is the Highland capital in the practical sense: the last big railhead, the place you sleep, and the start of Loch Ness, not a city you exhaust in museums. Urquhart Castle on the loch is the picture. The river and the castle in town are the evening.

Inverness is the Highland railhead: sleep in town, travel by day. Urquhart on Loch Ness is the picture; the river and castle in town are the evening.
Centre, river and station. The right base: dinner on foot, morning train or tour pickup without a scramble. Inverness Castle above the river is the local landmark — it is not Urquhart, and it does not have to be.
Lochside hotels. Look romantic; strand you at dinner unless you drive back in the dark. Better as a conscious driving stay than a first railhead night.
Far suburbs. Only if you already know the pickup rhythm. First visits stay walkable.
The Highland line from Edinburgh or Glasgow is the handsome way in — most of three to three and a half hours, scenery rather than a commute. The Caledonian Sleeper from London reaches Inverness as well as Edinburgh. Flying into Inverness airport works from London when the rail day is more than you want, with a short bus or taxi into town. Stage through the capital with Edinburgh stays and the London to Edinburgh rail guide when that is the spine.

Urquhart Castle on a point into Loch Ness is the worthwhile stop. A whistle-stop coach that turns around in a car park is the version that disappoints. Give the loch a day, or stay in town and take a boat that spends time on the water. Culloden is the other serious excursion, in the opposite mood. Evenings belong to the river in Inverness.
