A Greek-island week, not a city dash
Rhodes suits seven nights more than 48 hours. You come for water, Old Town lanes, and (if you pick Lindos) a village-and-acropolis pace. Non-stops from London are plentiful in summer and thin or absent in winter. A connection via Athens is the off-season tool, not a clever way to save money in August.
Package flight-plus-hotel is common on this route because UK school holidays move both seats and rooms together. Compare a bundle against a flight-only ticket plus the Rhodes stays guide before you assume the package is dearer.
Which London airport, which week
Gatwick, Luton and Stansted all appear in season. None is automatically cheapest. Count the coach or train from home, the 04:30 check-in, and bag fees. A Luton fare from south-east London is a different product from a Gatwick fare from Brighton.
July and August school holidays are the expensive, full-cabin shape of the route. Late May, June and September are the pleasant swimming months with slightly more breathing room. If your dates are locked to English summer holidays, search earlier and be willing to fly mid-week.
London airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Main Advantage | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow (LHR) | West London; full-service | Frequency / connections | Peak queues; often dearer headlines |
| Gatwick (LGW) | South / south-east | Strong leisure short-haul | Awkward from north of the river |
| Stansted (STN) | North-east / Essex; low headlines | Often cheapest ticket | Express + cross-London time |
| Luton (LTN) | North / M1 corridor | Regular low-cost schedules | Early starts; DART/coach hops |
Airlines on this route
easyJet, Jet2, TUI and Ryanair appear seasonally. Most use RHO.
Rhodes Airport and the island’s distances
RHO sits on the west coast near Ialysos. Nearby resort strips are a short transfer. Rhodes Town / Old Town is longer; Lindos is longer still and involves hills. A 23:00 arrival into Lindos with two children and hold bags is a different evening from an 11:00 arrival into Ixia.
If you want medieval atmosphere, budget porters or pack backpacks. If you want a buggy-friendly promenade, pick a coastal resort with a shuttle. Mixing “cheap flight + boutique Old Town house” without reading access notes is how people argue with taxi drivers at midnight.
Rhodes airports — quick compare
| Airport | Best For | Transfer to centre / resort | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rhodes (RHO) | All island arrivals | Transfer to Rhodes Town / Faliraki / south — often 20–60 min | Peak charter arrival halls |
Airport transfers — quick guide
- Heathrow: Elizabeth line or Piccadilly; Express is faster and dearer. Allow peak security time.
- Gatwick: Gatwick Express or Thameslink. Clean from south London; slower if you start north.
- Stansted: Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then Tube. Price that before a “cheap” fare wins.
- Luton: DART to Parkway, then rail into London. Fine with a cabin bag; slower with two hold cases.
- RHO: Town is close; southern resorts need longer transfers — match hotel before you land.
Direct versus Athens
In season, take the non-stop. Via Athens only when the island flight has stopped for winter, or when a genuine all-in saving survives a long layover and a second bag policy. A tight connection at ATH with a family hold bag is a poor August idea.
Car hire is useful for Lindos, the east-coast beaches and a day to Lindos from Town. It is optional if you are on a Faliraki or Ixia package with shuttles. Read parking notes for Old Town stays before you collect a car at RHO.
Bags and the first afternoon
Leisure carriers unbundle cabin bags, hold bags and seats. Families multiply those extras. Compare the all-in total for everyone, then look at a more inclusive fare. Change rules matter if your hotel is flexible and the flight is not.
Once dates are fixed, decide Town versus Faliraki versus Lindos, then compare Rhodes experiences (boat days, Lindos, Old Town walks). The flight is the access. The island layout is the holiday.
School-holiday aircraft and the Lindos last mile
English summer holidays are when RHO feels small. Direct flights sell toward the middle of the cabin, hold bags multiply, and a 22:50 arrival into Lindos with tired children is a long taxi up a hill. If those dates are locked, fly mid-week and pick a west-coast resort for the first night even if you move to Lindos later. If dates can move, late June and September are the version of Rhodes people mean when they say the water is warm and the Old Town is walkable.
Winter via Athens is a different trip: a connection, a second bag policy, and fewer resort restaurants open. It can still be excellent if you want Town walks rather than a package pool. In summer, take the non-stop from Gatwick, Luton or Stansted and spend the saving on a transfer that matches the hotel access — porters in the medieval lanes, not a surprise staircase with a 23 kg case.
