BKK versus Don Mueang (DMK)
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the main international airport. The Airport Rail Link reaches Makkasan and Phaya Thai; taxis and ride-hail are plentiful and traffic-sensitive. Partner searches for Bangkok typically mean BKK for long-haul — still read the ticket.
Don Mueang (DMK) north of the centre is the low-cost domestic and regional airport. It is useful if you continue to Chiang Mai or the islands on a Thai low-cost carrier. A BKK inbound plus a tight DMK outbound is a city crossing, not a connection. Allow serious road time.
Non-stop versus a one-stop from Europe
From London, non-stops to BKK exist alongside one-stops via the Gulf, Istanbul, Helsinki or Doha. The useful comparison is total time plus bags, not whether the ticket says “direct” when it still stops. From elsewhere in Europe, one-stops are more common than non-stops.
If you continue to Krabi, Phuket or Chiang Mai, decide whether that hop is on the same ticket. A cheap separate DMK flight the same evening after a long-haul into BKK is how people miss the last connection and buy a Bangkok hotel they did not want.
Cool season, Songkran and monsoon
November–February is the busiest period from Europe — milder evenings and peak hotel demand. Songkran in April is its own spike. The monsoon months are hotter, wetter and often cheaper for rooms; flights still move with school holidays.
There are no live fares on this page. UK Christmas and February half-term fill the comfortable non-stops first. Compare one-stop timings against a non-stop that lands at a civilized hour.
Airport Rail Link, taxis and boats
Airport Rail Link is the value way from BKK toward Phaya Thai, then BTS. Taxis from BKK should use the meter; traffic on the eastern approach can erase a “short” ride. River boats are for later, not for the airport run with two cases.
Sukhumvit and Silom suit first visits with BTS access; old town and the river are slower and better once you have dropped bags. Late DMK arrivals into a riverside hotel are a taxi job.
Bags, heat and stays
Long-haul fares into BKK often include a hold bag; the regional hop from DMK may not. Read each flight number. Cabin limits on low-cost Thai carriers are strict — weigh before you go to the gate.
Use the Bangkok stays guide once the airport is fixed. Related: London–Bangkok and Tokyo–Bangkok. If winter sun in Thailand is the wider plan, see Thailand winter-sun planning.
Hub night or a real Bangkok stay
A true Bangkok stay wants BKK, a BTS-handy Sukhumvit or Silom hotel, and enough nights to recover from the long-haul. A hub night on the way to the islands wants a hotel near the Airport Rail Link or a deliberate DMK plan the next day — not a 90-minute road dash the same evening.
Cool-season first-timers should book the must-do boats and temples before they land. Monsoon travellers should pack for rain and still enjoy the food. Do not buy a separate DMK coupon that leaves 70 minutes after you land at BKK; that is not how Bangkok traffic works.
