Two airports, and a coast that is not interchangeable
Cyprus is a UK package staple because the language is easy, the water is reliable from late spring, and you can fly in under five hours from London. The mistake is treating it as one pin. Paphos on the west, Larnaca in the south-east, and Ayia Napa further east are different holidays. A cheap fare into the wrong airport can cost you a two-hour coach after a night flight.
Larnaca (LCA) is the busier international airport and the logical landing for Larnaca town, Ayia Napa, Protaras and much of the east. Paphos (PFO) belongs to west-coast weeks and anyone whose hotel is actually in Kato Paphos or Coral Bay. Limassol sits between them and needs an honest transfer plan. This guide is the island as a stay decision, not a list of resort names.
Best areas to stay in Cyprus
Traveller tip: Match the airport to the coast before you fall for a hotel photo. West / harbour → Paphos (PFO). Promenade + short transfer → Larnaca (LCA). Beach-week east → Ayia Napa or Protaras — do not fly PFO for a Napa week.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paphos | First visit, harbour, mosaics | PFO | Longer hop to east beaches |
| Larnaca | Promenade, short transfer | LCA ~15 min | Less postcard harbour than Paphos |
| Ayia Napa | Livelier beach weeks | LCA + east transfer | Nightlife if you need sleep |
| Protaras | Family sand, quieter east | LCA + east transfer | Less nightlife than Napa |
Paphos
Paphos suits couples and first visits who want a harbour, mosaics and a walkable evening strip without committing to Ayia Napa’s nightlife. Kato Paphos harbour; a coffee on the harbour before the mosaics at opening, not a sit-down on the strip at 13:00.
Larnaca
Larnaca is the practical base if you want a promenade, a short transfer, and the option to day-trip east or west. Finikoudes; airport about 15 minutes — souvlaki inland of the palms, not a table on the promenade at 21:00 in August.
Ayia Napa and Protaras
Ayia Napa and Protaras are the beach-week product: families in the quieter pockets, groups on the livelier streets. Do not book Napa because the flight was cheap into Paphos. Nissi Beach in the morning; eat in Protaras if you have kids — Napa square is after 23:00, not lunch.
Typical mid-range stays are approximately £70–£120 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a good mid-range Cyprus stay in Kato Paphos or Larnaca promenade. Peak July–August and school-holiday weeks on the east coast usually cost more.
