A capital on a harbour, and an island next door
Malta is the rare UK short-haul that is both a city break and an island week. English is easy, Valletta is walkable, and the flight from London is about three hours. The mistake is treating Sliema, Valletta and Gozo as the same pin. Stone streets in the capital, the ferry strip across the water, and a second island with its own tempo are different holidays.
Luqa (MLA) is the only airport that matters. Buses and taxis cover the main island; the Gozo ferry from Ċirkewwa is a plan, not an afterthought. Mdina is a day, not a secret hotel district for first-timers who still want restaurants after 21:00. This guide is where to sleep so the harbours work.
Best areas to stay in Malta
Traveller tip: First visit → Valletta for harbour stone and walkable museums. Hotel stock + ferry → Sliema or St Julian’s. Slower island nights → Gozo overnight (not a rushed day-trip). Hills with cabin bags are real in the capital.
| Area | Best for | Access | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valletta | First visit, museums, harbour walks | MLA bus / Barrakka Lift | Hills + smaller rooms |
| Sliema / St Julian’s | Hotels, ferry, livelier evenings | Ferry to Valletta | Paceville noise on edges |
| Gozo | Slower island add-on | Ferry from Ċirkewwa | Needs overnight to feel right |
Valletta
Valletta is the right first-visit base if you want museums, harbours and evening walks without a bus at both ends of dinner. Rooms can be small, and hills with cabin bags are real. Airport bus to Valletta terminus, or the Barrakka Lift from the harbour; pastizzi on Republic Street before St John's, not a sit-down on the Grand Harbour at 13:00.
Sliema and St Julian’s
Sliema and St Julian’s suit travellers who want more hotel stock, a ferry into Valletta, and livelier evenings. Sliema ferry; eat on the Strand, then the crossing — Paceville is 23:00, not dinner.
Gozo
Gozo is the slower add-on: budget the ferry and stay overnight if you can. A single day-trip from Valletta is possible and rushed. Ferry from Ċirkewwa; Victoria market in the morning, Xlendi or Marsalforn for lunch — not a dash for the last boat.
Typical mid-range stays are approximately £80–£130 per room per night for a standard room for up to 2 adults — an approximate 2026 planning guide for a good mid-range Malta stay in Sliema or a Valletta palazzo conversion. Peak summer harbour-view rooms usually cost more.
